Linux Market Share Is 4.5%: The 10% Headlines Came From a Spike That Reversed in a Month

Linux market share on desktops was 4.54% worldwide and 3.69% in the United States in September 2026, according to StatCounter Global Stats. The 7%, 10% and 17% figures quoted this summer came from a June to August spike that reversed within a month. Visits to US federal websites (6.40%) and the Steam survey (3.05%) showed nothing like it.

We downloaded StatCounter’s monthly desktop operating system data for the world, North America, the United States and 248 countries and regions, in both of the forms StatCounter publishes (with its “Unknown” operating system bucket and without it), plus daily data for 2026. We added daily visits to US federal websites from the government’s Digital Analytics Program and 90 months of the Steam Hardware Survey. Then we matched every Linux figure in the top 10 search results to the exact series and month it came from.

The range runs from 3.09% to 17.78%, and every StatCounter figure on it is a real StatCounter value for some region and month. They disagree for three reasons: they come from different months, different regions, and two different versions of the same StatCounter series. 4 of the 8 StatCounter-based headlines we traced come from June to August 2026, the three months of the spike.

Why the headlines disagree

All 8 StatCounter figures quoted in the top results trace to a specific series and month, and 8 of them still match our October download to within 0.2 points (StatCounter revises recent months, so small gaps are expected). The key column is the series. StatCounter’s main desktop chart drops page views from unidentified operating systems (“Unknown”) and rescales the rest to 100%. Its other view keeps Unknown as its own slice, which pushes every named system lower. The Wikipedia and Level1Techs figures come from that second view.

“Unknown excluded” is the series behind StatCounter’s main desktop OS page; “Unknown counted” is the same data with Unknown kept as a category. For every month since January 2015 the first equals the second divided by (1 minus the Unknown share), within 0.01 points. Before this summer, desktop Linux was a slow climb. StatCounter’s worldwide headline averaged 1.65% in 2015, 1.81% in 2020 and 4.38% in 2024. The highest month before 2026 was 4.88% in August 2024. In the US the pre-2026 high was 5.66% in December 2025. In the first five months of 2026, Linux averaged 3.93% worldwide and 3.50% in the US, so the September 2026 reading of 4.54% is inside its normal range, not a new high.

Does the Unknown bucket hide Linux?

We tested this. Unknown averaged 5.8% of worldwide desktop page views in 2024, then grew to 25.2% in July 2026. In early September 2026 it collapsed: from an average of 23.5% on August 30 to September 2 to 2.6% on September 10 to 16, in StatCounter’s daily data. That freed 20.9 points of page views to be reassigned. Windows took 76% of them (Windows 11 alone 56%), macOS 17% and Linux 3.3%. Before the reclassification, Linux was 4.6% of identified page views, Windows 76% and macOS 17%.

So the Unknown pool was mostly unidentified Windows, in close to the same proportions as identified traffic, and Linux was not hiding in it. That makes StatCounter’s headline series, which spreads Unknown proportionally, the fairer worldwide number, and the “Unknown counted” figures (3.09% on Wikipedia, 2.95% and 3.07% on Level1Techs) too low. The same test across countries agrees: in the 7 markets where Unknown was 40% or more of desktop views in May 2026 (India, Nigeria, Thailand, South Africa, Iraq, Papua New Guinea and Ghana), the Unknown-counted Linux share rose by a median 3.9 points by September 2026 as Unknown shrank, while the headline share moved by a median +0.5 points.

India is the clearest case. Unknown was 49% of its desktop views in May 2026 and 10% in September 2026. Over those months India’s Unknown-counted Linux share went from 5.34% to 9.52%, while its headline share went from 10.57% to 10.52%. The headline was right all along; the Unknown-counted figure was not.

In the US, Linux went from 4.21% of desktop page views on June 23 to 9.63% on June 24, a jump of one day. It stayed at 8% or more every day until August 27, peaking at 27.00% on August 20, and dropped to 7.74% on August 28. No population of desktop users changes operating system overnight and then changes back nine weeks later. A step change like this points to a change in the traffic StatCounter measured, not in what people installed. PCWorld, citing Windows Latest, attributed it to bots; we cannot see the traffic, so we cannot confirm the cause, only that the jump and the reversal were abrupt.

Worldwide, the July headline of 7.51% would have been 5.62% with Unknown counted, because Unknown was 25.2% of views that month. Most of the spike was still in Linux-labelled traffic: worldwide the Unknown-counted share rose from a 3.23% average in January to May to 5.62% in July.

Linux share of desktop systems (Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome OS for DAP). DAP data start with its Google Analytics 4 collection in August 2023. Sources: StatCounter Global Stats; Digital Analytics Program; Steam Hardware and Software Survey, live page and Internet Archive captures.

US federal websites (DAP). The Digital Analytics Program collects visits to thousands of US government websites in one Google Analytics account, and Google Analytics automatically excludes traffic from known bots and spiders. Linux was 6.40% of desktop visits in September 2026 (Windows 72.7%, Mac 18.8%, Chrome OS 2.1%). From May to July 2026, StatCounter’s US figure went from 3.71% to 11.87%; DAP went from 5.08% to 6.92%, roughly back to the 6.40% it averaged in the 12 months before Windows 10’s end of support, and was 6.40% in September 2026. Federal sites saw a far smaller move, and no reversal. DAP was higher than StatCounter’s US series in 34 of the 38 months both cover, and its audience is different (people using government services), so read it as a second opinion, not the answer.

Steam. Valve’s survey samples gamers’ machines, so it counts devices, not page views. Linux was 3.05% of all respondents in September 2026. Steam’s month-to-month swings track its language mix: Simplified Chinese respondents, who rarely run Linux (1.19% of Linux respondents in Sep 2026), jumped to 31.4% of the sample in Sep 2026. Removing them gives 4.39% for the same month. Steam’s Linux share has risen over time, from 0.90% in January 2020.

The Steam Deck effect

SteamOS Holo, the system that ships on Valve’s Steam Deck handheld, first appears in our Linux survey captures in May 2022 at 5.2% of Linux machines. It reached 44.2% in August 2023 and has fallen to 17.4% in September 2026, while the Linux total kept rising. Desktop distributions such as CachyOS, Arch, Bazzite and Linux Mint now account for most of the growth: Linux machines other than SteamOS were 2.52% of all Steam respondents in Sep 2026, against 1.00% in Mar 2022 before SteamOS appeared.

Did Windows 10’s end of support move Linux?

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025 (our Windows 11 market share report tracks the upgrade). We compared each source’s average for the 12 months before (October 2024 to September 2025) with the seven months after, November 2025 to May 2026, which stops before the summer spike.

Linux share of desktop operating systems. “n/a” where a source has no data for the period. Sources as above.

In StatCounter’s page-view data, the answer is no: worldwide Linux share was 0.34 points lower after the deadline than before, and 0.70 points lower in the US. On US federal websites, Linux averaged 6.40% before and 4.99% after, also a fall. Steam is the one source that rose: excluding Simplified Chinese respondents, Linux averaged 3.20% of Steam machines before and 5.08% after, a rise of 1.89 points, against 0.48 points between the two preceding 12-month periods (the average was 2.72% from October 2023 to September 2024). Gamers moving to Linux after Windows 10 is consistent with that, but the Steam data cannot show why people switched, and the general desktop population in StatCounter shows no shift.

Using a 12-month median rather than one month keeps the summer spike from deciding the ranking. Even so, the top of the list needs care. The highest raw medians belong to tiny samples such as Yemen, Sudan, Chad, Laos and Nauru, which we leave out of the chart. Among the larger markets, Iraq, India, Thailand and Nigeria had most of their desktop views classed as Unknown for much of the year, so their headline shares rest on a small identified slice and swing more; the median with Unknown counted is roughly half the headline there. Of the large markets with stable samples and modest Unknown shares, the highest are Israel, Netherlands and Turkey at 8.3%, 6.4%, 6.4%. The US median was 4.06% and the world’s 4.24%.

Windows is still 76.4% of desktop page views worldwide and macOS 16.7%, about 4.6 Windows page views for every Mac one; in the US it is 64.5% to 26.4%, or 2.4 to 1. Chrome OS is a US story tied to the school year: US Chrome OS share was 3.2% in July and 5.7% in September 2024, 2.4% in July and 5.0% in September 2025, 2.1% in July and 5.3% in September 2026. Counting every device, not just desktops, Linux was 1.73% of worldwide page views in September 2026 and Android, which uses a Linux kernel, 42.6%.

Servers and supercomputers. Page-view trackers cannot see servers, and we found no public primary dataset that measures server operating system share, so we do not quote one. The one primary census we can cite is the TOP500 list of supercomputers: all 500 systems on every list since November 2017, through June 2026, run Linux. For the server side of the market, our cloud computing statistics track hyperscaler cloud revenue and spending through company filings.

What this means for MSPs

Do not plan on a 10% Linux desktop. Across the sources we checked, Linux sits between about 3.7% and 6.4% of US desktop systems, depending on what is counted. For a typical SMB client, that is a few machines in a hundred, plus Chromebooks where clients have bought them. Size Linux support, RMM agent licensing and patch tooling for that, not for the summer headlines.

Count Chromebooks separately. Chrome OS added 5.35 points to the US desktop total in September 2026. It runs on a Linux kernel but is a separate platform with its own management, so treat it as its own line in asset inventories and pricing.

Inventory beats market share. The Unknown episode shows how one vendor’s measurement change can move a public statistic by points in a month. Your RMM and identity logs tell you what your clients run. If a client asks about moving Windows 10 holdouts to Linux, note that general desktop traffic showed no shift toward Linux after the deadline; check application compatibility first, then patch coverage, since Linux desktops add their own vulnerability stream to the volume tracked in our CVE statistics.

Quote numbers with their series. If you cite Linux share in a proposal or QBR, give the month, the region and the source: “4.54% of desktop page views worldwide, StatCounter, September 2026”. It keeps the conversation on the client’s environment rather than on which headline is right.

Frequently asked questions

What is Linux’s market share in 2026?

In September 2026, Linux ran on 4.54% of desktop page views worldwide and 3.69% in the United States, according to StatCounter Global Stats. Counting Chrome OS, which also uses the Linux kernel, the figures rise to 6.85% worldwide and 9.04% in the US. On Steam, Linux was 3.05% of surveyed gaming PCs.

Did Linux really reach 10% market share?

Only briefly, and only in one tracker. StatCounter showed Linux at 17.78% of US desktop page views and 8.76% worldwide in August 2026, then 3.69% and 4.54% in September 2026. The daily data show US Linux jumping from 4.21% on June 23 to 9.63% the next day and staying above 8% until August 27. US federal website visits rose only from 5.08% in May to 6.92% in July, and Steam showed no jump.

Is Linux increasing its market share?

Slowly, depending on the source. StatCounter’s worldwide headline averaged 1.65% in 2015, 1.81% in 2020 and 4.38% in 2024, and was 4.54% in September 2026. On Steam, Linux rose from 0.90% in January 2020 to 3.05% in September 2026.

Is Windows losing market share to Linux?

Not in StatCounter’s data. In the seven months after Windows 10 support ended (November 2025 to May 2026), Linux averaged 3.97% of worldwide desktop page views, below the 4.31% average of the 12 months before. Windows held 76.41% in September 2026. Steam is the exception: Linux averaged 3.75% of respondents after the deadline against 2.32% before.

What is the market share of macOS and Chrome OS?

In September 2026, macOS (StatCounter’s OS X and macOS labels combined) had 16.74% of desktop page views worldwide and 26.44% in the US. Chrome OS had 2.31% worldwide and 5.35% in the US. Windows had 76.41% and 64.52%.

What does Unknown mean in StatCounter’s OS data?

Page views whose operating system StatCounter could not identify. The share grew from a 5.8% average in 2024 to 25.2% of worldwide desktop views in July 2026, then fell to 5.2% in September 2026. StatCounter’s main desktop chart leaves Unknown out, so figures quoted from its ‘with Unknown’ view are lower, which explains many conflicting Linux numbers.

Methodology

Sources. StatCounter Global Stats: “Operating System Market Share”, platform Desktop, monthly, in its combined form (Unknown excluded, the series on StatCounter’s main desktop OS page) and its detailed form (Unknown as a category), downloaded as CSV from StatCounter’s chart export on 2026-10-15; daily data for April 1 to October 14, 2026 for the world and the US; all-platform data for context. Digital Analytics Program API v2, report “os”, daily visits across participating federal websites, Aug 2023 to Sep 2026. Steam Hardware and Software Survey, combined and Linux-only pages, live for September 2026 and from Internet Archive captures for earlier months. TOP500 operating system family statistics. The headline pages in the reconciliation table, read in October 2026.

Definitions. “Headline” means StatCounter’s combined series, which excludes Unknown page views. “Unknown counted” keeps them as a category. Linux share in DAP is Linux visits divided by Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Chrome OS visits. Steam “excluding Simplified Chinese” is Linux share times (1 minus the Simplified Chinese share of Linux respondents) divided by (1 minus the Simplified Chinese share of all respondents), using the Linux-page language share from the nearest month we retrieved. Country rankings use the median of the 12 monthly values from Oct 2025 to Sep 2026. The reclassification test compares daily averages for August 30 to September 2 and September 10 to 16, 2026, worldwide.

Coverage. September 2026 is the latest complete month; October 2026 was partial at retrieval and is excluded. Steam months are those available live or in Internet Archive captures (90 months). Sample sizes come from StatCounter’s July 2022 country list, the latest it publishes.

Limitations. StatCounter counts page views on sites that run its tracker, without weighting, so heavy users count more, and it says it may revise figures for 45 days. StatCounter says it works to exclude bots; we cannot see its raw traffic, so we cannot say what caused the summer 2026 spike. DAP is subject to Google Analytics sampling and covers only visitors to US government sites. Steam covers gamers, and its sample mix shifts month to month. None of these sources measure installed devices across a whole population.

Not advice. This is an analysis of public usage data, not a platform recommendation.
