Microsoft End of Support 2026: 69 Products and Versions Cut Off, 27 on One Day, and Microsoft’s Own List Gets .NET 9 Wrong
Microsoft end of support 2026 covers 69 products and versions, by our count of Microsoft’s live lifecycle pages. 60 had already lost updates by October 31, including Office 2021, SQL Server 2016 and SharePoint Server 2016 and 2019, and 27 fell on October 13 alone. 7 more end on November 10, 2026, among them .NET 8, .NET 9 and Windows 11 version 23H2 for Enterprise.
We read the lifecycle page of every Microsoft product that was still in support in Microsoft’s lifecycle export, 208 pages in all, and pulled every date that falls in 2026 or 2027. We then added the paid Extended Security Update (ESU) periods Microsoft publishes on separate pages: Windows 10, Exchange Server 2016 and 2019, and Skype for Business Server 2015 and 2019. A product counts once per lifecycle listing or version, the way Microsoft lists it, so Word 2021 and Word LTSC 2021 are two entries.
The 2026 calendar: 27 cutoffs on October 13
Microsoft ties most end dates to Patch Tuesday (58 of the 69 fall on a second Tuesday), so the year clusters on a few days. The 69 hard stops land on just 14 dates. October 13 carries 27, 22 of them Office 2021 or Office LTSC 2021 apps. April 14 ended 10 older products, 8 of them desktop management tools: App-V 5.0 and 5.1, MBAM 2.5, AGPM 4.0, DaRT 10 and UE-V 2.1. July 14 took out 10, led by SQL Server 2016, SharePoint Server 2016 and 2019 and Project Server 2016 and 2019. Each square below is one product or version; hover for the name.

Countdown: every Microsoft end of support date in 2026
All 75 lifecycle milestones Microsoft lists for 2026, counted from our publication date of October 31, 2026. 69 are hard stops, where a product or version stops receiving security updates. The other 6 are phase changes that keep updates flowing: Windows Server 2022 leaving mainstream support, SQL Server 2014 and Windows 10 starting a new paid ESU year. Product names link to Microsoft’s lifecycle page or announcement.

Fixed policy products get a set mainstream and extended period; Modern policy products and versions are supported while customers stay current. “No ESU listed” means the product’s lifecycle page lists no Extended Security Update period. Next supported option is the successor whose own lifecycle page we read, or for versioned products the newest version on the same page.
The big ones
Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021: 22 entries, no ESU
Every Office 2021 suite and app, retail and LTSC, Windows and Mac, ended on October 13, 2026. Microsoft’s Office support page says there will be “no extension and no extended security updates.” The apps keep running, but they no longer get security fixes. The direct successors, Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024, are supported until October 9, 2029. Clients that move to subscriptions instead should budget for the Microsoft 365 price changes that took effect in 2026. Publisher 2021 and Publisher LTSC 2021 have no successor version on Microsoft’s lifecycle pages.
SQL Server 2016: the only 2026 end of support with paid ESU
SQL Server 2016 reached end of extended support on July 14, 2026. Of the 51 products that reached end of support or retired in 2026, it is the only one whose lifecycle page lists paid ESU, with three yearly periods running to Jul 17, 2029. SQL Server 2014’s second ESU year ended the same day; its third and final year runs to July 12, 2027. Our SQL Server end of life analysis covers every version’s dates, ESU pricing and the CVEs Microsoft still lists for each.
SharePoint Server 2016 and 2019, Project Server, InfoPath
SharePoint Server 2016 and SharePoint Server 2019 both ended on July 14, 2026. SharePoint Server 2019 became available on October 22, 2018, more than three years after 2016 (May 1, 2016), yet its lifecycle page sets the same extended end date. Project Server 2016 and 2019, InfoPath 2013 and SharePoint Designer 2013 ended the same day. None has ESU. The on-premises successors are SharePoint Server Subscription Edition and Project Server Subscription Edition, both under the Modern policy.
Windows 11: 24H2 Home and Pro and 23H2 Enterprise end in 2026
Windows 11 feature updates have fixed servicing windows: 24 months for Home and Pro, 36 months for Enterprise and Education. Version 24H2 Home and Pro ended on October 13, 2026, and version 23H2 for Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise ends on November 10, 2026. There is no ESU for Windows 11 versions; the fix is a feature update. With Windows 11 now on most Windows desktops, according to our Windows 11 market share tracker, keeping each fleet on a serviced version becomes a yearly task rather than a one-time migration.
| Edition | Version | End of servicing | Countdown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 Home and Pro | Version 24H2 | Oct 13, 2026 | Passed 18 days ago |
| Windows 11 Enterprise and Education | Version 23H2 | Nov 10, 2026 | 10 days left |
| Windows 11 IoT Enterprise | Version 23H2 | Nov 10, 2026 | 10 days left |
| Windows 11 Enterprise and Education | Version 24H2 | Oct 12, 2027 | 346 days left |
| Windows 11 Home and Pro | Version 25H2 | Oct 12, 2027 | 346 days left |
| Windows 11 IoT Enterprise | Version 24H2 | Oct 12, 2027 | 346 days left |
Windows 10: consumer ESU was extended, commercial Year 2 has started
Windows 10 itself left support on October 14, 2025. For home users, ESU does not end in 2026: Microsoft’s consumer ESU page now says the program runs until October 12, 2027, and that already-enrolled PCs continue automatically with no action needed. That is a year past the October 13, 2026 end of the commercial Year 1 period. Consumers can still enroll at no cost by syncing PC settings, by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or with a one-time $30 purchase. Microsoft’s page says the consumer program can’t be used on domain-joined or MDM-enrolled devices, which rules out most managed business fleets.
For organizations, Microsoft’s ESU FAQ lists Year 1 as ending October 13, 2026, Year 2 on October 12, 2027 and Year 3 on October 10, 2028. Year 1 cost $61 per device at list price, and Microsoft says the price doubles every year. ESU is cumulative, so a device joining in Year 2 must also pay for Year 1.
Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2022, Exchange and Skype for Business Server
The third and final paid ESU year for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 ended on October 13, 2026, the same day Windows Server 2022 left mainstream support (it stays in extended support, with security updates, until October 14, 2031). Our Windows Server end of life report maps every version’s phases and the CVEs fixed only for ESU buyers. Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 left support in October 2025, but Microsoft sold two ESU periods; the second runs to the end of October 2026, and Microsoft’s Exchange team says it released the final set of updates for both versions on October 13, 2026. Skype for Business Server 2015 and 2019 had the same Period 2 schedule, ending at the end of October 2026. One more server date is easy to miss: Windows Server, version 23H2, the last Annual Channel release, stopped receiving security and quality updates on May 12, 2026, according to Microsoft’s end-of-updates statement. It appears neither on Microsoft’s 2026 summary page nor as a version on the Windows Server Annual Channel lifecycle page.
.NET 8, .NET 9 and PowerShell: November 10, 2026
.NET 8 (LTS) and .NET 9 both reach end of support on November 10, 2026. .NET 9 was originally due to end in May 2026, but Microsoft extended Standard Term Support releases from 18 to 24 months in September 2025, which moved .NET 9 onto the same date as .NET 8. PowerShell 7.4 (LTS) and PowerShell 7.5 end that day as well; the supported replacements are .NET 10 and PowerShell 7.6 (LTS), both supported to November 14, 2028. Azure IoT Edge 1.5 (LTS) also ends Nov 10, 2026, and its lifecycle page lists no newer version.
Which product families lose the most
Office accounts for 22 of the 69 hard stops because Microsoft lists each app separately. Next come management and security tools (11), mostly App-V, MBAM, AGPM, DaRT and UE-V versions plus two Configuration Manager versions, then Dynamics (7). By policy, 41 of the 69 fall under the Fixed policy and 28 under the Modern policy.
Microsoft’s own 2026 list is out of date
Microsoft publishes a one-page summary, “Ending Support in 2026”, which shows a last-updated date of April 18, 2025. We matched each of its 71 product entries to the live product page. 3 dates differ, the page leaves out 2 versions whose product pages show a 2026 end date, and it lists one product in two contradictory sections. The largest error is .NET 9: the page still shows May 12, 2026, 182 days earlier than the date on the .NET product page and on Microsoft’s .NET support policy page. Microsoft’s lifecycle export workbook (last modified July 10, 2026) carries the same old .NET 9 date. The 2026 page also lists 46 Azure API, SDK and feature retirements, which we leave out of our counts.
| Item | Section on Microsoft’s 2026 page | Date on 2026 page | Date on product page | Gap (days) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Azure Metrics Advisor | Product Retirements | Oct 1, 2026 | May 18, 2026 | -136 |
| Azure Personalizer | Product Retirements | Oct 1, 2026 | Aug 25, 2026 | -37 |
| .NET 9 | End of Servicing | May 12, 2026 | Nov 10, 2026 | +182 |
| Microsoft Configuration Manager, Version 2503 | Not listed | Not listed | Sep 30, 2026 | Missing |
| PowerShell, PowerShell 7.5 | Not listed | Not listed | Nov 10, 2026 | Missing |
| Office LTSC 2021 for Mac | Listed twice: End of Support, and Products moving to Extended Support | Oct 13, 2026 (both) | Mainstream and extended both end Oct 13, 2026 | Contradiction |
The practical point: build client end-of-life reports from the individual lifecycle product pages, not from the yearly summary or the export.
2027 preview: Windows Server 2016 is 73 days away
Microsoft’s lifecycle pages and ESU announcements list 40 milestones in 2027, 31 of them hard stops. January is the busiest month: Windows Server 2016, Hyper-V Server 2016, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and the System Center 2016 suite all end on January 11 or 12. Microsoft says Windows Server 2016 ESU will be sold through Azure Arc for up to three years, through 2030, and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 ESU went on sale September 1, 2026, at $61 per device for Year 1, with coverage available through January 8, 2030 (the IoT Enterprise edition stays in support to January 13, 2032). October 12, 2027, 346 days out, brings SQL Server 2017, the end of consumer Windows 10 ESU, commercial Windows 10 ESU Year 2, and Windows 11 version 24H2 for Enterprise and 25H2 for Home and Pro.
Filled dots stop updates; hollow dots are phase changes (end of mainstream support or a new ESU year). Colors follow the product families above.

What this means for MSPs
Inventory against the product pages, now. Most of 2026 is gone: 60 of 69 hard stops have passed. Pull software inventory from your RMM and match it against the countdown table above. Items to look for first: Office 2021 and LTSC 2021, SQL Server 2016 instances behind line-of-business apps, SharePoint Server 2016 and 2019, Windows Server 2012 machines that were on ESU, and Exchange 2016 or 2019 servers kept for hybrid or relay roles. Developers’ machines and app servers need a separate check for .NET 8, .NET 9 and PowerShell 7.4 or 7.5 before Nov 10, 2026.
Do the ESU math per device. For Windows 10, the ESU price doubles each year. At Microsoft’s list price, covering a device through October 12, 2027 costs $183, and through October 10, 2028 costs $427, because Year 1 must be bought retroactively.
| Covered through | ESU years bought | Per device | 25 devices | 100 devices |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| October 13, 2026 (ended) | Year 1 | $61 | $1,525 | $6,100 |
| October 12, 2027 | Years 1 and 2 | $183 | $4,575 | $18,300 |
| October 10, 2028 | Years 1, 2 and 3 | $427 | $10,675 | $42,700 |
Microsoft’s April 2024 pricing post also described a $45 Year 1 price for devices updated through Intune or Windows Autopatch, and its 2026 post on Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 quotes the same $61 and $45 Year 1 prices for that edition; confirm current pricing with your licensing partner. Windows 10 devices that connect to Windows 365 Cloud PCs are entitled to ESU for up to three years with an active Windows 365 subscription, and Windows 10 virtual machines in Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop get ESU at no additional cost. For SQL Server 2016, ESU is the only way to keep getting security updates on that version, so price it against a migration to SQL Server 2022 or 2025. For Office 2021, SharePoint, Project Server and the App-V, MBAM, AGPM, DaRT and UE-V tools, there is nothing to buy: replace or retire.
Set client communication by date, not by product. The 2027 calendar has three dates that matter for most MSP clients: January 12 (Windows Server 2016, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021), July 12 (final SQL Server 2014 ESU year) and October 12 (SQL Server 2017, Windows 10 ESU Year 2 and consumer ESU, Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise and 25H2 Home and Pro). Hardware procurement and server migrations need lead time, so the January date belongs in this quarter’s business reviews. Patch volume is not slowing either, as our Patch Tuesday statistics 2026 show, which raises the cost of every unpatched system.
Treat unsupported software as a compliance finding. NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 control SA-22, “Unsupported System Components”, tells organizations to replace system components when support is no longer available from the developer or vendor, or to provide alternative sources of support. CISA’s Bad Practices list says use of unsupported or end-of-life software in service of critical infrastructure “is dangerous and significantly elevates risk”, especially for internet-facing technology. Cyber insurance applications and renewals may ask about unsupported software; we did not review insurer forms for this report, so check each client’s policy and application wording rather than assuming coverage.
Frequently asked questions
What Microsoft products reach end of support in 2026?
By our count of Microsoft’s live lifecycle pages, 69 products and versions stop receiving updates in 2026: 36 reach end of support, 15 retire, 15 versions reach end of servicing and 3 paid Extended Security Update programs close. The largest groups are Office (22), management and security tools (11) and Dynamics (7).
When does Office 2021 support end?
Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 reached end of support on October 13, 2026. Microsoft says there will be no extension and no extended security updates. Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 are supported until October 9, 2029.
Is Windows 10 ESU ending in October 2026?
Not for consumers. Microsoft now says consumer Windows 10 ESU runs until October 12, 2027, and enrolled PCs continue automatically. For organizations, ESU Year 1 ended October 13, 2026; Year 2 runs to October 12, 2027 at $122 per device, and Year 1 must also be bought, so joining now costs $183 per device at list price.
When does SQL Server 2016 support end?
SQL Server 2016 reached end of extended support on July 14, 2026. It is the only product reaching end of support in 2026 with a paid ESU path on its lifecycle page, running to July 17, 2029.
What Microsoft products end support in November 2026?
7 versions reach end of servicing on November 10, 2026: Windows 11 Enterprise and Education, Version 23H2; Windows 11 IoT Enterprise, Version 23H2; .NET 8 (LTS); .NET 9; PowerShell 7.4 (LTS); PowerShell 7.5; Azure IoT Edge, Version 1.5 (LTS).
What Microsoft products reach end of support in 2027?
Microsoft’s lifecycle pages and ESU announcements list 31 products and versions that stop receiving updates in 2027, including Windows Server 2016 (January 12, 2027), Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 (January 12, 2027), the final SQL Server 2014 ESU year (July 12, 2027) and SQL Server 2017 (October 12, 2027).
Methodology
Sources. Microsoft Lifecycle “Export all products” workbook (product-lifecycle-data-new.xlsx, last modified July 10, 2026, 2,943 rows); the live Microsoft Learn lifecycle product page of every product the export lists as in support or with any date from July 2025 on, plus every product linked from Microsoft’s “Ending Support in 2026” and “Ending Support in 2027” pages and the successor products named in our table (208 pages); Microsoft’s ESU FAQ, Windows 10 ESU pages, the Windows Server, version 23H2 end-of-updates statement, Office 2021 end of support page, .NET support policy, and the Exchange and Skype for Business team announcements of ESU Period 2. All retrieved October 30, 2026.
Definitions. A milestone is one date on one lifecycle listing or version. Hard stops are: end of support (end of extended support for Fixed policy products, or the only support end where no extended phase exists, as with Office LTSC 2021), retirement (Modern policy products), version end of servicing (a version of a Modern product, or a servicing channel such as a Visual Studio LTSC release), and the end of a final paid ESU period. Phase changes are the end of mainstream support and the end of a non-final ESU year. A final service pack that ends on the same day as its product is not counted twice. Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 ESU Year 3 is one row because the dates and the decision are identical.
Dates. Lifecycle pages store dates as UTC timestamps; we convert them to Pacific time, the zone Microsoft says it uses. Countdown days are counted from October 31, 2026. Exchange and Skype for Business Server ESU Period 2 is dated October 31, 2026 because Microsoft describes it as running “through the end of October 2026”.
Exclusions. Component items (such as IIS or .NET Framework versions, which follow their host operating system) and Azure feature, API and SDK retirements are not counted. Cloud services with their own Modern policy lifecycle pages, such as Azure Personalizer, are counted.
Limitations. Counts depend on how Microsoft splits listings; Office apps are counted individually because Microsoft lists them individually. A product with a 2026 date added after the July 2026 export and not linked from Microsoft’s yearly pages could be missed; reading every in-support product page is our guard against that. Microsoft can change lifecycle dates, as the .NET 9 extension shows. Successor names are limited to products whose lifecycle page we read; we do not name successors Microsoft’s pages do not support. Visual Studio 2026 monthly releases are not listed as versions on its lifecycle page and are not counted.
Not advice. This is an analysis of Microsoft’s public lifecycle data, not licensing or legal advice. Confirm ESU pricing with your Microsoft licensing partner.
