Android Market Share by Version: 43.6% of Devices Run Versions Google’s Security Bulletins No Longer List

Android market share by version, per Google’s distribution feed last updated October 1, 2026: Android 16 leads at 25.4%, then Android 14 at 15.3% and Android 15 at 14.7%. Android 17 has 0.9%. The October 2026 Android Security Bulletin lists fixes only for 14 through 17, so 43.6% of devices run versions it no longer covers.

Sources: Google’s Android Studio distribution feed (its columns sum to 99.9% after rounding; no separate row for 12L); StatCounter Global Stats, Android version, mobile; Android Security Bulletins, “Updated AOSP versions” column, every bulletin from January 2018 through October 2026, grouped by major release. StatCounter also reports 0.05% worldwide on Android 5.0 or 4.x. “Not listed” means Google’s bulletin names no fix for that version. It does not mean a device gets nothing: phone makers can backport fixes, and Google Play system updates are separate.

The November 2026 bulletin, due on the first Monday of the month under Google’s schedule, was not posted when we retrieved the pages on 2026-11-02. The newest device figures are from October 1, 2026. Google updates this feed irregularly: Android Authority reports the previous update as December 2025, with Android 16 at 7.5%, so Android 16 added 17.9 points in about ten months.

Google counts devices on Google Play; StatCounter counts page views across its network, so newer, busier phones weigh more. Before September they nearly agreed: StatCounter had 57.1% of worldwide Android page views on listed versions in August against Google’s 56.3% of devices. Then StatCounter moved to 69.9% by October 2026. Android 16 alone gained 12.0 points in September 2026, while Google’s feed implies under 2 points a month. Over the same weeks the US labels for Android 5.0, 6.0 and 8.0, which had swung as high as a combined 11.6% in January 2026 and were 2.1% in August, fell to 0.41%. StatCounter’s iOS, vendor and desktop series show breaks in the same month, as we document in iPhone market share by country and Mac market share. So we lead with Google’s figure and treat the StatCounter split as a page-view count that has just shifted. Chromium’s documentation adds a second caution: Chrome on Android now sends the literal string “Android 10; K” in its user agent whatever the real version is. StatCounter’s labels still reach Android 17, so it evidently reads another signal, and it does not say which.

Android 14 is next: how long versions stay in the bulletins

Bars run from the first to the last bulletin that names the version in its “Updated AOSP versions” column. Our download starts in January 2018. Right column: share of devices, Google feed, October 1, 2026. Dashed: what the past pattern would imply for Android 14; Google has not announced a date.

Android 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 stayed in the bulletins for 40, 41, 40, 40 and 39 months. Android 14 first appeared in October 2023 and has reached 36 months, so the same pattern would drop it around January 2027 to March 2027. It runs on 15.3% of devices, and removing it today would leave 41.0% on listed versions. Android 13 went the same way: it was listed in the December 2025 bulletin and absent from March 2026 on, with no 2026 bulletin naming it. Google’s overview page gives no end-of-support calendar, so this table is the record: read each bulletin’s version column.

Fixes now arrive in clumps. Since July 2025, 6 of 16 monthly bulletins had no platform CVEs, and 91% of platform CVEs landed in March, June, September or December, the months Google says it merges platform fixes into AOSP. The bulletins carried 128 platform CVEs in 2024, 239 in 2025 and 225 so far in 2026, and flagged 3, 10 and 2 CVEs as possibly under limited, targeted exploitation; the latest flag was CVE-2025-48595 in the June 2026 bulletin. A month with no platform CVEs is not always an empty bulletin: January 2026 still carried a Critical Dolby codec flaw, CVE-2025-54957, outside the platform tables.

Where Android dominates: above 90% and below 50%

Android held 72.39% of mobile page views worldwide in October 2026 (69.3% on a 12-month average), having passed iOS in August 2011 and peaked at 78.84% in June 2018. Among the 100 largest StatCounter samples, 8 were at 90% or more, led by Papua New Guinea (95.0%), Kenya (94.9%), India (94.8%), Ethiopia (93.8%). India, the second-largest sample, was at 94.85%. The Android minority sits in 11 of the 100: Denmark (33.0%), Canada (35.2%), Australia (37.9%), Macao (40.8%). Single-country figures also carry the September 2026 break.

Source: StatCounter Global Stats, monthly CSV export. Licensed CC BY-SA 3.0. Ranked among the 100 countries with the largest samples (July 2022 list). Listed versions = Android 14 to 17 as a share of Android page views. Samsung % of Android treats StatCounter’s Unknown vendor bucket as Android.

The share on listed versions varies widely. In October 2026 the lowest among these samples were Iran (50.6%), Pakistan (52.0%), Nigeria (52.9%), Uganda (54.1%), and the highest South Korea (86.9%), Denmark (86.7%), Guatemala (85.2%), Singapore (84.0%). The iOS side of the same countries is in our table of iPhone market share by country.

Samsung’s share of Android

Samsung was 31.4% of Android page views worldwide in October 2026 and the top Android brand in 87 of the 100 largest samples. It reaches 94.7% in South Korea and 4.4% in China. In the US it is 60.2%. Two checks bound the number. Excluding StatCounter’s Unknown vendor bucket (5.26% worldwide, labeled Beta by StatCounter) raises the worldwide share to 33.8%. On US federal websites, Samsung model names were 54.4% of Android visits on October 29 to 31, 2026, with Pixel at 8.5% and Motorola at 6.8%.

That matters because the patch cadence differs inside Samsung’s line. Its security update page lists Galaxy S23 through S26, Z Fold5 and later, Z Flip5 and later, and the A54 to A57 enterprise models for monthly updates, and many Galaxy A models for quarterly ones, including the A04 to A08, A14 to A18 and A24 to A26 families, plus the S22 and S21 FE. It lists no models for biannual updates at present, and says carriers may support only quarterly updates on current models and that its support runs up to 7 years since January 2024. Google’s Pixel page promises 7 years for Pixel 8 and later and 5 years for Pixel 6, 6a, 7, 7a and Fold.

What this means for MSPs

Write the BYOD floor as Android 14 today, and plan for 15. On Google’s numbers, a 40-phone Android fleet would have about 17 phones below a floor of 14 and about 6 more on 14 itself, which may leave the bulletins around January 2027 to March 2027. Tell clients now, and pull the real count from the MDM.

Enforce patch level, not just version. A phone on Android 14 with an old patch level is exposed all the same, and no public dataset shows patch levels. Intune’s Android compliance policy has both a Minimum OS version and a Minimum security patch level, and neither is set by default. Microsoft supports Android 10 and later for user-based management, so the tool will enroll versions the bulletins dropped in February 2023: the floor has to come from your policy. Allow about 90 days on patch level, or quarterly Galaxy A phones will fall out of compliance between updates. Take these values from the MDM, because Chrome’s user agent reports Android 10 on every phone.

Buy for the support date. For company-owned phones, use devices whose maker publishes a security end date; Android Enterprise Recommended requires the maker to publish it, along with update frequency. Choose monthly-update models for anyone with admin access. Check the device against Samsung’s or Google’s list, since model suffixes vary. Apply the same discipline on desktops, where Windows 11 adoption and Linux desktop figures have their own end-of-support and data traps.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most used Android version?

Android 16, at 25.4% of devices in Google’s feed last updated October 1, 2026. Android 14 is second at 15.3% and Android 15 third at 14.7%. StatCounter’s page-view series also ranks Android 16 first, at 37.9% worldwide in October 2026.

Which Android versions still get security updates?

The October 2026 Android Security Bulletin lists fixes for Android 14, 15, 16, 16 QPR2 and 17. Android 13 last appeared in December 2025, Android 12 and 12L in March 2025, and Android 11 in February 2024. Phone makers can backport fixes to older versions on their own schedules.

What share of Android phones are unsupported?

43.6% of devices in Google’s feed run Android 13 or older, versions the October 2026 bulletin does not list. StatCounter’s page views give 30.1% worldwide and 26.3% in the US for October 2026, and 42.9% and 35.4% for August, before a break in its series.

When will Android 14 stop getting security updates?

Google has not published a date. Android 9 through 13 stayed in the bulletins for 39 to 41 months after first being listed, which would put Android 14’s last listing around January 2027 to March 2027. That is a pattern, not an announcement. Android 14 runs on 15.3% of devices.

What is Android’s market share worldwide?

Methodology

Sources. Google’s Android Studio distribution feed (distributions.json, “Last updated: October 1, 2026”), retrieved 2026-11-02. StatCounter Global Stats: Android Version Market Share (mobile), Mobile Operating System Market Share, Device Vendor Market Share, downloaded as monthly CSV on 2026-11-02. Every Android Security Bulletin from January 2018 to October 2026 on source.android.com, parsed from the HTML tables. GSA Digital Analytics Program API v2, reports “os” and “device-model”. Samsung’s security update page, Google’s Pixel update page, the Android Enterprise Recommended requirements, and Microsoft Learn’s Intune pages.

Definitions. “Listed” means a version appears in the bulletin’s Updated AOSP versions column at least once. 12L counts with 12, and 16 QPR2 with 16. StatCounter’s point labels are grouped by major release; two labels with no matching release (“25.x”, “27.0”) are left out of the groups. First listing is a proxy for release date. The support-window pattern is our arithmetic on the bulletins, not a Google commitment.

Coverage. October 2026 is the latest complete StatCounter month, and StatCounter may revise figures for 45 days. The DAP device-model report is limited to 10,000 rows per request and returns the newest days first, so it covers only complete days received, October 29 to 31, 2026.

Limitations. Google’s feed reflects devices on Google Play, so phones without Play sit outside it. StatCounter counts page views. A CVE missing from an older version’s list can mean the flaw does not exist there, so per-version CVE counts are not coverage gaps. No public source reports security patch levels across the installed base. Google’s Play system updates and maker backports can protect devices that the bulletins no longer list.

Not advice. This is an analysis of public data, not a security recommendation for any environment.
