WARN workers by employer’s notice date, with notices read through October 29, 2026. Employees are Alphabet-wide, from Forms 10-K and earnings releases. Revenue per employee uses annual revenue over year-end staff; the 2026 row uses the 12 months to September 30 ($471B) over 204,757. New York data starts in 2019 and California in mid-2014, so a zero in early years means no notice in those files. “None” means no severance figure in that year’s filings.

  • 2026. No company number. People Matters, citing Business Insider, reported voluntary exits in business units in February; unconfirmed.
  • 2025. No layoff number. A spokesperson confirmed a voluntary exit program for Platforms and Devices (TechCrunch, January 30).
  • 2024. No company number found in filings. Severance charges fell to $1.0B.
  • 2023. About 12,000 roles worldwide, in Sundar Pichai’s January 20 post and an 8-K under Item 7.01.
  • 2017. No company statement found. The two notices are Mountain View filings.

Alphabet was not cutting net headcount in most of those years. Year-end staff rose every year from 2015 to 2022 and again in 2024 and 2025, and fell only in 2023, by 7,732. No notices appear for 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 in the files we read. Before 2023 the only Google filings are two California notices from January 2017, for 198 workers in Mountain View.

Does Google do layoffs often?

More often than the year totals suggest, and mostly in small lots. Since January 2023, Google or an Alphabet unit has filed on 16 separate dates in 46 months, about one every 2.9 months. Google itself has filed in each of those four years.

One bar for each state, filer and notice date since 2023. Blue is Google, light blue is Verily or Waymo. Hover for details.

Since 2024, 8 of the 10 Google notices name 50 to 77 workers (50, 50, 52, 52, 53, 57, 73, 77, 225, 628). California and Washington generally require notice when 50 or more workers are affected, so the clustering just above 50 means this count can only see the part of Google’s cuts that reaches that size. Smaller rounds leave no public filing. We cannot tell from the files how many exist.

What changed most recently

The newest filing is a letter dated August 5, 2026 to Washington’s Employment Security Department, the first Google entry in a database running back to 2004. It covers about 52 employees in Kirkland (21), Seattle (20) and Redmond (8), plus 3 remote workers. Employees were notified in three batches, on July 8, July 15 and August 4, with separations from September 6 to October 4. The attached titles break down as: Engineering 24, UX design and research 10, Recruiting and people programs 10, Product, program and partnerships 8, including 8 mechatronics engineers and 8 recruiters and sourcers. Before that, Verily filed for 58 workers at 999 Bayhill Drive in San Bruno on June 8, 2026. California’s file through October 28 shows no new Google notice since January 26, 2026.

Press reports describe more than this. People Matters, citing a Business Insider memo report on February 12, 2026, says Google offered voluntary exits in parts of its Global Business Organization and did not comment. A Reuters headline carried on TradingView says Google is quietly laying off staff in its cloud division, per Business Insider. We could read only the headline, which gives no number. Both are unconfirmed by Google and neither is counted in the table.

Quarter-end “number of employees” from Alphabet earnings releases filed on Form 8-K. Alphabet notes that the March 31, 2023 count still includes almost all employees affected by the January reduction, so the visible drop arrives in the next quarter. TTM is the 12 months to September 30, 2026.

The 12,000-role cut shows up plainly in the line: 190,711 at March 31, 2023, 181,798 at June 30, then a slow slide to 179,582 at June 30, 2024. That low is 11,129 below the peak, or 5.8%, against 12,000 stated. Filings do not split hires from exits, so the net number cannot say how many of the 12,000 had left. Headcount has risen in all nine quarters since, and 204,757 is 14,046 above the old peak. Revenue per employee rose from $1.49M in 2022 to $2.30M in the 12 months to September 2026. Notices every year and record net hiring are both in the record. For the wider picture, compare our tech layoffs tracker for 2026.

The geography has moved. Mountain View has 1,234 workers in the record, but its last Google notice is dated January 22, 2024. Google’s California notices since 2025 cover Sunnyvale (180), Irvine (52). Many of the Sunnyvale buildings are on Borregas Avenue and Bordeaux Drive, and New York’s 887 from January 2023 are all listed at one address, 111 8th Avenue. New York has shown no Google notice since January 2024.

Severance dollars and what filings say next

The company’s numbers come from its 10-Ks. The 2022 Form 10-K guided to $1.9 billion to $2.3 billion for the January 2023 cut. The 2023 Form 10-K recorded $2,088 million: $479 million in cost of revenues, $848 million in R&D, $497 million in sales and marketing and $264 million in general and administrative, of which $432 million was stock-based compensation. Divided across 12,000 roles, that is about $174K a role, our arithmetic and not Alphabet’s. Office space charges added $1,845 million. The 2024 Form 10-K puts severance at $1.0 billion, with $716 million of that in the first quarter according to the first-quarter 10-Q.

After that the disclosure stops. The 2025 Form 10-K and the 2026 Forms 10-Q say severance is not allocated to segments and state no amount. Alphabet’s filings announce no new plan, and we found no 8-K under Item 2.05, the SEC’s item for exit and restructuring costs, in any Alphabet filing since 2016. The January 2023 announcement was furnished under Item 7.01. So the filings say nothing about further cuts, and hiring is the visible trend. For how employers tie cuts to AI, see our AI layoffs attribution ledger. Pichai’s 2023 note set U.S. terms of at least 16 weeks’ salary plus two weeks per additional year, and TechCrunch’s 2025 report covers voluntary exit offers, not layoffs.

What this means for MSPs

The checkable part: of the 52 Washington positions, one title mentions partnerships and none is a sales role. California and New York rows give addresses and counts, not teams, so these notices cannot show whether partner support changed. Advice, not a finding: do not read this ledger as evidence that Google Workspace or Cloud support is shrinking, because it does not measure support. If your Google partner contact changes, ask for the replacement in writing and keep your own escalation path written down.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google do layoffs often?

Yes, on a small scale. Google or an Alphabet unit filed WARN notices on 16 dates from January 2023 through October 2026, in all four years. But most are small: 8 of the 10 Google notices since 2024 name 50 to 77 workers. Alphabet still added 25,175 staff from the 2024 low.

How many people did Google lay off in 2023?

Alphabet stated about 12,000 roles worldwide on January 20, 2023. Notices in the states we checked name 2,219 workers that year, 1,840 of them dated January 20: 953 across 40 California addresses and 887 at 111 8th Avenue in New York. Severance and related charges were $2.1 billion.

How many people has Google laid off in 2026?

Google has published no 2026 layoff number. Notices so far name 187 workers: 129 at Google (77 in Sunnyvale, 52 in Washington) and 58 at Verily in San Bruno. Press reports of voluntary exits and of cuts in Google Cloud carry no confirmed totals.

Did Google headcount fall after the layoffs?

Yes, then it recovered. Alphabet reported 190,711 employees at March 31, 2023 and 179,582 at June 30, 2024, a fall of 11,129. It reached 204,757 at September 30, 2026, a record, adding 5,824 in the latest quarter alone.

How much has Google spent on severance?

Alphabet recorded $2.1 billion of employee severance and related charges in 2023 and $1.0 billion in 2024, including $716 million in the first quarter of 2024. Its 2025 Form 10-K and 2026 Forms 10-Q give no severance figure.

Which Google offices had the most layoffs?

In notices since 2017, Mountain View leads with 1,234 workers and New York City is second with 1,112. Mountain View’s last Google notice is dated January 22, 2024. Every Google California notice since then has been for Sunnyvale, San Francisco or Irvine.

Methodology

Sources and dates. Retrieved November 2, 2026. California EDD fiscal-year PDFs from July 2014 and the current spreadsheet through October 28, 2026. Washington ESD WARN database, January 2004 to October 29, 2026, with Google’s notice letter. New York DOL dashboard export, notice years 2019 to 2026. Texas open-data WARN file, 2019 to June 23, 2026. Maryland DOL tables, 2014 to October 29, 2026. SEC EDGAR: every Alphabet 10-K from fiscal 2015, 10-Qs from 2020, and earnings releases from Form 8-K from February 2016. Revenue from SEC XBRL company facts.

States checked. Complete files read: California, Washington, New York, Texas and Maryland. No Alphabet-group row appears in Texas or Maryland. Pages opened with no usable employer list, or blocked: Virginia, Georgia, Oregon, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Iowa, Utah, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, New Jersey, Tennessee, Florida, D.C. and North Carolina (2026 list read, no match). So this ledger is a floor. Google offices in unchecked states would not appear.

Rule for what counts. A notice counts when the filer’s name is Google, or a named Alphabet unit it owned on the notice date. Verily and Waymo are shown separately and labelled, never blended into the Google column. Fitbit counts only after the January 2021 close, and it has no notice since. Alphabet’s 10-Ks name Verily through fiscal 2021, and the 2026 filing is under “Verily Health Inc.”; we could not confirm Alphabet’s current stake from a filing, so that row carries the label and sits in the Alphabet column. Excluded: a January 2017 Fitbit notice filed before the deal, and contractors at Google sites, including Command Security’s 33 at 100 Bay View Drive in November 2023. Motorola Mobility notices from 2015 and 2016 are excluded because Alphabet reports that business as discontinued from 2014.

Counting. Workers as listed, by employer’s notice date. Exact repeats are dropped. California addresses are summed by notice date and city in the ledger. Washington’s 52 is “approximately 52” in Google’s letter. Titles are counted from the letter’s attachment and only title counts are kept, not names or addresses. Year-end employees for 2015 to 2025 match the Form 10-K count wherever the 10-K gives one.

Limits. WARN covers site-level cuts above a threshold: 50 or more at a California or Washington site, and 25 or more in New York. Global cuts, voluntary exits and sub-threshold cuts are missing. The 12,000 is global, so WARN’s 2023 total is not a U.S. count. A notice is a plan and may change. Press items are labelled and excluded from counts. A tracker such as WARNTracker’s Alphabet page, which shows only Sunnyvale rows from 2025 and 2026, will differ.

Not advice. An analysis of public filings, not employment, legal or investment advice.
