We downloaded the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) files for May 2025 and May 2024 and read the full percentile bands for information security analysts (SOC 15-1212), the occupation code BLS uses for security analyst work, plus four adjacent IT occupations. We then added state price levels from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, industry detail, 12,140 security labor rates from GSA’s federal contract database, and pay records for 84,652 federal IT specialists from the Office of Personnel Management.

The cybersecurity pay ladder

Each rung is a percentile of the national pay distribution for the 190,650 information security analysts BLS counted in May 2025. BLS does not record job titles such as “SOC analyst” or “cybersecurity engineer” or years of experience, so the rungs are pay ranks, not career stages. To the right, the medians of adjacent occupations show where they fall on the same scale.

Cybersecurity salary by state, adjusted for cost

State medians for information security analysts range from $81,950 in Montana to $154,940 in Washington. State pay tracks local prices (the correlation between the two in this data is 0.69), so we divided each median by the BEA’s 2024 Regional Price Parity for the state, which measures price levels against the national average. Dots above the red line pay more than the national median scaled to local prices.

In 16 of the 246 metro areas with a published 90th percentile it is $200,000 or more; among those with at least 1,000 security analysts, the highest are San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA ($278,340), San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, CA ($246,070), Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH ($225,300), Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD ($218,620), New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ ($216,280). 4 of the 16 are small markets with fewer than 100 analysts (or no published count), where a handful of high earners can set the figure. Our highest paying cities for IT jobs ranks the metro medians.

Which industries pay security analysts most

Among the 27 industries with at least 1,000 information security analysts, Web Search Portals, Libraries, Archives, and Other Information Services pays the highest median ($175,410). Computer systems design and related services (NAICS 5415), where MSPs, MSSPs and IT consultancies sit, employs 43,440 of them, 23% of the total, at a $132,410 median that ranks 10th. Its 10th percentile ($70,740) is below the national figure, while its 90th ($206,920) is above it.

By employer type, private employers pay a $130,310 median to 181,130 security analysts. State governments ($98,010) and local governments ($100,310) pay less. OEWS counts only 340 federal workers in this occupation (median $138,280), so federal security pay is better read from OPM’s own records below.

What federal contracts and federal jobs pay

GSA contract rates for security labor

GSA’s CALC+ database lists the ceiling hourly rates contractors may bill the government under the Multiple Award Schedule. We classified 12,140 security labor categories by title. These are billing rates, which cover salary, benefits, overhead and profit, so they run well above wages: the median security analyst category bills $131.51 an hour, 2.1 times the BLS median wage. Numbered analyst levels step up from level I $101.83, level II $129.05, level III $145.78, level IV $164.15.

Federal IT specialists (GS-2210)

OPM’s August 2026 workforce file lists 84,652 federal employees in the 2210 Information Technology Management series, which covers all federal IT specialists; the file does not separate security specialists from the rest. OPM redacts pay for 52% of them, mostly at the Defense Department and the military departments. For the 40,336 full-time employees with published pay, the median is $148,711.

Grade Employees 10th Median 90th

What this means for MSPs

Benchmark offers to the percentile you mean. A first security hire with a few years of support or sysadmin experience is not a median analyst. The national 25th percentile ($97,810) is one reasonable anchor for a junior SOC seat, and the median ($129,180) for an analyst who can run investigations alone. Then scale by the state’s price level in the table above rather than by a national average.

Your industry pays the national rate in the middle and less at the bottom. Computer systems design firms pay security analysts a $132,410 median but a $70,740 10th percentile, and at the median, software publishers, securities firms and research labs all pay more than IT service firms. Bottom-rung pay rose 7.8% nationally in a year, so entry offers set in 2024 may already be below the market.

Price managed security from the wage, not from the contract rate. GSA billing rates for analyst work ($131.51 an hour at the median) are a ceiling for federal buyers. The gap between that and a $62.11 median wage has to cover benefits, tools, overhead and margin, so price a managed SOC seat from your own loaded wage cost, not from contract ceilings. Pay for the support staff on the same teams is in our companion help desk salary report.

Frequently asked questions

Is cyber security a high paying job?

Yes, by BLS data. Information security analysts had a median wage of $129,180 in May 2025, 2.5 times the $50,980 median for all U.S. occupations. Even the 10th percentile, $75,090, is 47% above the all-jobs median.

Can I make $200,000 a year in cyber security?

Some do. The national 90th percentile for information security analysts is $199,850, so roughly one in ten earns about $200,000 or more. In 16 of 246 metro areas with a published figure, the 90th percentile is $200,000 or higher, led by San Jose at $278,340. Among computer and information systems managers, the category that includes computer security managers, the 75th percentile is $220,730.

What is the entry level cyber security salary?

BLS does not measure pay by years of experience, so the closest data point is the bottom of the distribution: the 10th percentile for information security analysts is $75,090 ($36.10 an hour) and the 25th is $97,810. BLS lists a bachelor’s degree and less than 5 years of related work experience as the typical entry requirements.

How much does cyber security make per hour?

The median information security analyst earned $62.11 an hour in May 2025. The 10th percentile was $36.10 and the 90th $96.08. On federal contracts, the median GSA ceiling rate for security analyst labor categories is $131.51 an hour, a billing rate that also covers overhead and profit.

Which industries pay cybersecurity analysts the most?

Among industries with at least 1,000 information security analysts, web search portals, libraries, archives, and other information services pays the highest median, $175,410. Computer systems design and related services, the industry that includes MSPs and MSSPs, employs the most (43,440) at a $132,410 median. Government employers pay the least.

What state pays the most for cybersecurity?

Washington has the highest state median for information security analysts, $154,940. Adjusted for local prices with BEA Regional Price Parities, Washington still ranks first at $144,786, followed by New Mexico and North Carolina. California falls from 3rd to 17th.

Methodology

Sources. BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS), May 2025 and May 2024: national, state, metropolitan area, national industry (4-digit NAICS) and national ownership files, downloaded October 2026. BEA Regional Price Parities by state, all items, 2024 (released February 2026). BLS Employment Projections 2025 to 2035, Table 1.2. GSA CALC+ ceiling rates API. OPM Federal Workforce Data employment file for August 2026 and OPM 2026 General Schedule pay tables. The 2018 SOC direct match title file, used to state which job titles BLS assigns to each code.

Definitions. “Cybersecurity salary” here means OEWS wages for information security analysts (SOC 15-1212). OEWS wages are straight-time gross pay including incentive pay; they exclude overtime, nonproduction bonuses and employer-paid benefits. Annual figures are hourly rates times 2,080 hours. Adjacent roles are shown with their BLS names; their medians cover the whole occupation, not only security staff. Cost-adjusted state pay is the state median divided by the state’s 2024 Regional Price Parity over 100.

Contract rates. We queried CALC+ for eleven security keywords, removed duplicates, kept Information Technology categories, excluded physical security titles (guard, protective, investigator and similar), and assigned each title to one family by the first matching pattern in this order: CISO, penetration tester, architect, cloud security engineer, engineer, ISSO or ISSM, incident response or SOC, analyst or specialist, manager. Families with fewer than 30 rates are not shown.

Federal pay. OPM records with redacted pay are excluded from the pay figures. Because redaction falls mostly on defense agencies, the published-pay group is weighted toward civilian agencies.

Limitations. OEWS does not report experience, certifications, remote status or job titles, and suppresses estimates that do not meet its reliability standards. One-year changes compare estimates that share four of six survey panels. Not advice: these are labor market statistics, not a compensation recommendation for any role.
