iPhone market share by state

No public primary source publishes it. StatCounter’s region list holds 249 countries and territories plus 8 continental groupings, and no US states; we tried state-style region codes in its CSV export and got back empty files. The GSA Digital Analytics Program lists 15 reports, none with a state or city field for operating system or device. So 52.00% (StatCounter, October 2026) and 68.5% (federal sites) are national figures. A state table on another page would need its own survey or model, so ask for its method before citing it.

Source: StatCounter Global Stats, monthly CSV export. Licensed CC BY-SA 3.0. iOS share of mobile page views. Shaded band between the lines is the gap; pink shows September and October 2026. Read 2009 and 2010 loosely: US iOS moved from 69.03% in January 2009 to 64.28% the next month.

The US has run ahead of the world since StatCounter’s first month. The gap peaked at 37.5 points in November 2018 (62.0% vs 24.6%) and was 24.4 points in October 2026, below the yearly average of every year since 2012. Android first passed iOS worldwide in August 2011 and crossed 50% of mobile page views in March 2014. Worldwide, iOS bottomed at 18.3% in October 2015 and reached a post-2012 high of 32.6% in April 2026, before falling back to 27.6%, near the 27.0% of October 2025.

Did the US really lose 8.7 points in two months?

Probably not. StatCounter’s US iOS share fell from 60.71% in August 2026 to 53.51% in September and 52.00% in October, its lowest reading since October 2024. The September drop of 7.2 points is the largest one-month fall since at least 2015. The nearest precedent, a 6.1-point fall in October 2024, reversed the next month (51.19% to 56.02%). Four things in the data argue against reading that as people leaving the iPhone:

  • Federal traffic moved the other way. iOS was 67.98% of iOS plus Android visits to US government sites in August and 68.47% in October 2026, the highest of the 39 months in our DAP series (low: 62.40% in November 2024).
  • The replacement traffic looks odd. StatCounter gives Xiaomi 6.56% of US mobile page views in October 2026, up from 0.95% in March. Xiaomi model names on federal sites came to 0.86% of iPhone plus Android visits on October 29 to 31. Samsung jumped from 21.97% to 28.92% in two months in StatCounter; a handset base does not turn over that quickly.
  • Other parts of StatCounter broke in the same month. The iOS 11.0 to 11.x labels held 3.49% of worldwide iOS views in June 2026 and 0.02% in October 2026. On desktop, StatCounter’s Unknown operating system bucket fell from 24.09% worldwide in August to 5.20% in September, and the summer jumps in Mac share and the Linux spike ended.
  • It was not only the US. Across the 100 largest samples, 79 of 100 had a lower iOS share in October 2026 than in August (median change -3.3 points, 31 down 5 points or more). In the same months of 2025, 26 of 100 fell, with a median of +1.4.

The fall may also be the wrong end to look at. World iOS climbed from 27.94% in December 2025 to 32.56% in April 2026 with no matching move on federal sites, so the first eight months of 2026 could be the high readings. We cannot tell from public data which months are right. One check does clear the mobile OS series of the desktop problem: its Unknown bucket has stayed at or below 0.04% worldwide since February 2026. The vendor series is not clear, as the next section shows.

StatCounter monthly exports, retrieved 2026-11-02; DAP report “os”, visits summed by month. StatCounter says it may revise figures for 45 days after publication, so Oct 2026 can still change. We do not know what caused the shift; StatCounter’s FAQ says it flags significant changes with a note on its graphs.

The two sources also differ in level. Across Aug 2023 to Oct 2026, DAP averaged 65.8% iOS and StatCounter 58.0%, and their monthly correlation is only 0.34. Federal sites draw a different audience from StatCounter’s network of over 1 million sites, and DAP counts visits while StatCounter counts page views. DAP’s iOS line includes iPads, but the iPad is small there: 1.9% of iOS visits on October 29 to 31, when iPhones alone made 68.1% of iPhone plus Android visits.

iPhone vs Samsung and other brands

Apple led the vendor table in 52 of the 100 largest samples in October 2026, Samsung in 42, and another brand in 6 (Nepal: Xiaomi, Myanmar: Xiaomi, Nigeria: Tecno, Iraq: Honor, Bangladesh: Xiaomi, India: Vivo). Worldwide the order was Apple 27.57%, Samsung 22.72%, Xiaomi 11.81%, Vivo 7.35% and Oppo 7.17%. In the US it was Apple 52.00%, Samsung 28.92%, Xiaomi 6.56% (see above), Motorola 3.44% and Google 3.25%.

StatCounter labels this series Device Vendor (Beta) and it carries an Unknown bucket, 5.26% worldwide in October 2026 and as high as 16.69% in September 2025, against 2.5% in April 2022. The rise follows Chrome’s reduced user agent, which reached all Android clients on Chrome 110 and later in May 2023, though we cannot separate causes. Apple’s figure still matches iOS, so read rival brands as minimums. The federal data gives a second view of US Android: Samsung model names (SM-) made 54.4% of Android visits on October 29 to 31, against 60.2% of non-Apple page views in StatCounter; Pixel models made 8.5% and Motorola 6.8%. The Android side is covered in depth in Android market share by version.

Usage share is not sales share

Everything above measures web use by phones already in people’s hands. Sales share is a different number, and it comes from private trackers whose data is proprietary, so we quote it only as they or the press stated it. Counterpoint Research, as reported by MacRumors on May 13, 2026, put the iPhone at 75% of first-quarter 2026 smartphone sales at Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. Counterpoint’s April to June 2026 data, as reported by Beebom on August 28, 2026, put iOS at 20% of global smartphone sales and 51% of US phones shipped. The two US figures use different bases (carrier sales and phones shipped), so they are not a like-for-like trend, and one quarter’s sales moves usage slowly because most phones in use were bought in earlier years. We could not check these figures against a primary dataset.

iOS version adoption: Apple’s number and the frozen browser label

Apple publishes the only first-party count. Its App Store support page says, as measured by devices that transacted on the App Store on June 7, 2026, that 79% of all iPhones and 86% of iPhones introduced in the last four years ran iOS 26. StatCounter’s iOS 26 labels in June 2026 were lower (69.7% of iOS page views worldwide, 77.2% in the US).

StatCounter’s series has a known fault line. WebKit’s notes for Safari 26 say the user agent “no longer lists the current version of the operating system”, so Safari on iOS 26 reports iPhone OS 18_6. That fits what StatCounter showed: 79.0% of US iOS views on iOS 18 in December 2025 and only 11.2% on iOS 26, then 68.2% on iOS 26 by February 2026, a jump too sharp to be upgrades alone. We infer that its labeling changed; StatCounter does not say so. A page quoting iOS 26 adoption from before February 2026 is likely reading this artifact. In October 2026, the labels give iOS 27 16.4% worldwide and 15.6% in the US, and iOS 17 or older 5.7% and 3.1%.

For patching, Apple’s security releases page is the record. On October 26, 2026, it lists iOS 27.2 and iOS 26.7.2 for iPhone 11 and later, and iOS 18.7.11 for iPhone XS, XS Max and XR. The latest listed iOS 16.7.16 (iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X) and iOS 15.8.8 (iPhone 6s, 7, SE first generation) are dated May 11, 2026. Apple’s guide lists iPhone 11 and later as compatible with iOS 27.

Apple’s own figures: revenue, not units

Apple stopped reporting iPhone units after fiscal 2018, when it sold 217.7 million; its filings give 1,468 million from fiscal 2007 through 2018 and a unit peak of 231.2 million in fiscal 2015. Its 10-K calls its share of the global smartphone market a “minority market share” without giving a figure. iPhone net sales were $209.6 billion in fiscal 2025, 50.4% of $416.2 billion in total sales and the highest in the filings we parsed. In the first nine months of fiscal 2026 they already reached $196.5 billion, up 22.4%, with the April to June quarter at $54.3 billion, up 21.7%. Apple’s fourth-quarter filing was not on EDGAR when we retrieved the data on 2026-11-02.

Apple does split all-product net sales by country in one place. Its fiscal 2025 10-K gives the US $151.8 billion, China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan) $64.4 billion and all other countries $200.0 billion. That is the closest Apple comes to iPhone sales by country, and it includes Macs, iPads, wearables and services.

What this means for MSPs

Size BYOD from the country and client, not a global average. A 40-phone US client at the national figures has 21 to 27 iPhones (StatCounter to federal range), with Samsung the bulk of the rest. A similar client in India would have about 2. Pull the real count from your MDM before quoting a per-device price; 53.9% in Japan and 27.7% in Germany show how far one number is from another.

Set an iOS floor by device, and read it from the MDM. A policy of iOS 26.7.2 or later, with iOS 18.7.11 allowed only for iPhone XS and XR, follows Apple’s October 26, 2026 releases. Do not enforce it from web logs or conditional-access rules that parse the user agent: Safari on iOS 26 reports iPhone OS 18_6. Microsoft’s Intune documentation lists iOS/iPadOS 18 and later as supported for personally enrolled devices, allows enrollment from 16 only for devices without user affinity, and requires 17.x or later for app protection policies, so a personal iPhone on iOS 16 or 15 sits outside app protection in that stack.

Quote the right number. Give clients the 12-month average (59.2% US, 30.5% worldwide) with the source and month, and do not build a forecast on the September and October 2026 drop until StatCounter’s 45-day revision window closes and DAP or Apple’s next filing confirms it. The browser side of the same traffic is in our report on Safari’s share of browsers.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries have the highest iPhone market share?

Among the 100 countries with the largest StatCounter samples, Denmark (67.0%), Canada (64.7%), Australia (62.1%), Macao (59.2%) and Switzerland (56.3%) led in October 2026. Over the last 12 months the order was Canada (63.8%), Denmark (62.9%) and Australia (61.6%).

Is there iPhone market share by US state?

Not from any public primary source we could find. StatCounter’s region list has 249 countries and territories and 8 continental groupings, with no US states, and the 15 reports in the federal DAP API have no state field. The narrowest public figure is national: 52.0% of US mobile page views in October 2026.

What percentage of phones are iPhones?

About 27.6% of mobile page views worldwide came from iPhones in October 2026 (30.5% on a 12-month average), according to StatCounter. That measures use on the web, not phones sold or phones owned. No public primary source counts the installed base.

What is iPhone market share in the US?

StatCounter puts it at 52.00% for October 2026 and 59.2% on a 12-month average. On US federal websites, iPhones made 68.1% of iPhone plus Android visits on October 29 to 31, 2026, and iOS 68.5% of iOS plus Android visits across the month.

iPhone vs Android: who is ahead?

Android worldwide: 72.4% to 27.6% in October 2026. iOS in the US: 52.0% to 48.0%. iOS was the majority in 11 of the 100 largest country samples in October 2026, and in 14 on a 12-month average.

How many iPhones does Apple sell?

Apple last reported units for fiscal 2018: 217.7 million iPhones. It has reported revenue only since then: $209.6 billion in fiscal 2025, 50.4% of total net sales. Unit figures for later years come from private trackers, not Apple.

Methodology

Sources. StatCounter Global Stats: Mobile Operating System Market Share (headline series and the detailed series with Unknown), Device Vendor Market Share (mobile), iOS Version Market Share (mobile), downloaded as monthly CSV from its chart export on 2026-11-02. GSA Digital Analytics Program API v2: reports “os” (Aug 2023 to Oct 2026), “device” and “device-model”. Apple Inc. WebKit’s Safari 26 notes and Chromium’s User-Agent Reduction page.

Definitions. iPhone share is iOS on StatCounter’s mobile platform, which it defines as pocket-sized devices and which leaves tablets out. Country rankings cover the 100 countries with the largest StatCounter samples. The 12-month average is the mean of Nov 2025 to Oct 2026. DAP iOS share is iOS divided by iOS plus Android visits and includes iPads; the iPhone figure from “device-model” does not. Federal data covers visits to participating government sites and is not limited to visitors in the US.

Coverage. October 2026 is the latest complete month. The device-model report is limited to 10,000 rows per request and returns the newest days first, so it covers only the complete days we received (October 29 to 31, 2026), not the whole month.

Limitations. StatCounter and DAP count page views and visits, not devices: heavy users and undetected automated traffic count more, and StatCounter does not weight its data by country. Xiaomi model matching on DAP uses name patterns and is approximate. Neither source measures how many phones exist, and no public primary source gives a count by country or state. Sales figures attributed to Counterpoint are secondhand.

Not advice. This is an analysis of public usage and financial data, not a purchasing or security recommendation for any environment.
