Domain Name Statistics 2026: 401.6 Million Registered, and the Fastest-Growing TLDs Barely Renew
Domain name statistics from the registries themselves: 401.6 million domain names were registered across all top-level domains at the end of Q2 2026, up 8.1% in a year, according to Verisign. In ICANN’s registry reports, new gTLDs hold 22% of generic-TLD domains but supplied 54% of their growth from June 2025 to June 2026, much of it in TLDs where fewer than 1 in 5 names renew.

Everything else on this page is our own analysis of the monthly per-registrar transaction reports that every generic TLD registry files with ICANN: 1,117 gTLDs for Jun 2026, every June back to 2015, and a year of monthly history for the largest, to see which TLDs are growing, who renews, and which registrars hold the names.
How many domain names are registered?
401.6 million domain names were registered across all top-level domains at the end of Q2 2026, up 29.9 million or 8.1% in a year, Verisign said on July 23, 2026, citing the latest DNIB.com quarterly report. By its count, .com and .net hold 179.1 million (166.6 million .com and 12.5 million .net), country-code TLDs 148.6 million, and all other generic TLDs the remaining 73.9 million. Of the year’s 29.9 million increase, .com and .net added 8.6 million, ccTLDs 5.2 million, and all other gTLDs 16.1 million, 54% of the growth from 18% of the names. The rest of this report uses ICANN’s registry reports, which cover generic TLDs only (.com, .org, .xyz and the like), not country codes such as .cn, .de or .uk. They count names in every registry status, so they run slightly higher than Verisign’s figures: 170,253,825 .com names in Jun 2026 against Verisign’s 166.6 million.

gTLDs only. Sum of “total-domains” in the Totals row of each registry’s June report (ICANN Monthly Registry Reports). For consistency across years we include gTLDs with at least 100 names in June 2025 or June 2026 plus TLDs no longer in the root zone; the excluded small TLDs held 6,918 names in Jun 2026.
Is domain growth flat? It was. Generic TLD domains grew between 0.2% and 4.1% a year in each June-to-June period from 2021 to 2025, and in ICANN’s monthly .com reports the TLD shrank from 165,538,669 names in Apr 2023 to 159,938,837 in Dec 2024. Then gTLD domains rose 10.5% in the year to June 2026, the fastest annual growth since June 2016, to 264.0 million. The answer depends on where you look, and the next section shows where.

gTLDs only, from ICANN Monthly Registry Reports, same TLD set as the chart above.
Generic TLDs gained 25.0 million names from June 2025 to June 2026, and the gain split unevenly. New gTLDs, the extensions launched since ICANN’s 2012 program, hold 22.3% of gTLD domains but added 13.6 million, 54% of the growth, a 30.1% rise in a year. .com, with 64% of gTLD names, supplied 35% of the growth, while .net shrank.
The TLD league table
ICANN requires each gTLD registry to file a monthly report listing, for every registrar, the domains it sponsors, the names added, renewed and deleted. ICANN publishes them three months after the month ends. Of the 1,117 gTLDs that filed for Jun 2026, 569 had fewer than 1,000 names (most are single-company brand TLDs). Shaded rows meet our promo-churn test (renewal rate under 20% and 12-month adds at least 75% of the June 2025 base). Adds and renewals sum the 1 to 10 year columns; deletes are deletions outside the add grace period; renewal rate is renewals divided by renewals plus those deletions, July 2025 to June 2026. Domains include every EPP status, so expired names in grace periods are counted. Source: ICANN Monthly Registry Reports.

.xyz is the largest new gTLD with 9,153,912 names, up 74% in a year, and .top is second with 7,433,320. Growth in these TLDs has not been steady. 6 of the 12 lost at least 40% of their names from a previous peak at some point since 2016: .xyz fell 70% from Dec 2016 to Aug 2018; .top fell 73% from Dec 2016 to May 2021; .site fell 43% from Apr 2020 to May 2022; .vip fell 57% from Feb 2020 to Jul 2022; .bond fell 79% from Dec 2024 to Sep 2025; .click fell 86% from Sep 2016 to Sep 2020. We set aside drops that the reports’ own deletion counts cannot explain, which look like changes in how a registry counted names: .app lost 697,507 names in Aug 2022 while reporting 23,264 deletions; .click lost 341,977 names in Nov 2025 while reporting 36,512 deletions; and smaller unexplained drops in .lol. .bond is the clearest recent cycle: after its fall to 187,565 names in Sep 2025 it climbed to 1,196,241 by Jun 2026, while renewing just 4,915 names in 12 months.

Which TLDs grow through cheap promotions? The registry reports do not carry prices, so we cannot see the discount itself. What they show is the footprint a first-year promotion leaves: very high new registrations relative to the existing base, followed by very low renewals when the cheap year ends. 21 of the 75 largest gTLDs fit that pattern: .xyz, .top, .shop, .store, .site, .sbs, .bond, .lol, .click, .cfd, .icu, .cyou, .autos, .lat, .skin, .makeup, .pics, .rest, .beauty, .qpon, .mom.
For comparison, 74.1% of expiring .com names were renewed over the same months, and .xyz renewed 17.9% while adding 7,344,217 names, 140% of its June 2025 base. Across the 65 largest new gTLDs with a full year of reports, the renewal rate was 22.7%.

The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index across all 2,903 accreditations with at least one .com name is 972, down from 1,159 in 2016. The 2023 Merger Guidelines from the Justice Department and FTC call a market with an HHI above 1,800 highly concentrated, and note that earlier guidelines treated anything above 1,000 as concentrated. Measured by accreditation, the .com registrar market fell below 1,000 for the first time in our series. That understates true concentration, because ICANN reports each accreditation separately and one company can own several; the two Squarespace accreditations alone hold 5.6%.
Most accreditations are tiny. 1,676 of the 2,903 accreditations hold fewer than 1,000 .com names each, yet in Jun 2026 they sent 64% of the 512,072,320 create commands .com received. That pattern fits accreditations used to race for names the moment they are deleted. Over the year, .com saw 6.5 billion attempted creates for 43.0 million successful new registrations, about 150 attempts per name.
What this means for MSPs
Expect lookalike domains in the high-churn TLDs. The promo-churn TLDs added millions of names this year and let most of them lapse. Names registered in bulk and dropped within a year suit short-lived abuse, the raw material of the campaigns in our phishing statistics report. Watch for client brand names under .xyz, .top, .shop, .online and the other TLDs flagged above, not just .com typos, and treat first-seen domains in those TLDs with extra suspicion at the mail gateway and DNS filter.
Treat renewal as a security control. 94,137 .com names were deleted on an average day over the past year, and the create commands aimed at .com ran to 150 per successful registration. A client domain that lapses does not sit idle: it is raced for the moment it is released, and a new owner can receive the email still addressed to it. Keep client domains on auto-renew with a payment card that does not expire unnoticed, consolidate them at one registrar account the MSP can see, and put expiry dates in the same tracker as certificate renewals.
Register the defensive names that matter, not every TLD. With 1,117 gTLDs reporting, blanket defensive registration is not realistic. The registry data narrows it: the names worth holding are the client’s .com and country code, plus the high-volume TLDs where registrations churn fastest. The same logic applies to package typosquats in our malicious npm packages analysis: the attack surface is wherever registration is easy and unreviewed.
Know where client domains are held. Ten accreditations hold 56.7% of .com, so most client domains sit at a handful of registrars. Enable registrar lock and multi-factor authentication there; a compromised registrar login can redirect DNS and mail for every domain in the account. Frequently asked questions
How many domain names are registered?
401.6 million across all top-level domains at the end of Q2 2026, Verisign reported on July 23, 2026, citing DNIB.com, which is 29.9 million (8.1%) more than a year earlier. Country-code TLDs account for 148.6 million and .com and .net for 179.1 million. ICANN’s registry reports count 263,991,780 names across 1,117 generic TLDs in Jun 2026, in every status.
How many .com domains are there?
Verisign put the .com base at 166.6 million at the end of Q2 2026. ICANN’s registry report for Jun 2026 counts 170,253,825 .com names, a slightly higher figure because it includes names in every status, such as expired names still in grace periods. In those reports .com shrank from 165,538,669 in Apr 2023 to 159,938,837 in Dec 2024 before its latest rise.
What are the most popular domain extensions?
Among generic TLDs in ICANN’s Jun 2026 reports, the 10 largest were .com, .net, .org, .xyz, .top, .info, .shop, .online, .store, and .site. .xyz is the largest new gTLD with 9,153,912 names, up 74% in a year. Verisign lists the top 10 country codes as .cn, .de, .uk, .ru, .nl, .br, .fr, .au, .in, and .eu.
How many domains are registered every day?
In Jun 2026, gTLD registries reported 8,923,610 new registrations that survived the five-day add grace period, about 297,454 a day, before counting country codes. .com alone averaged 117,717 new names and 94,137 deletions a day from July 2025 to June 2026.
What is the renewal rate for domain names?
From July 2025 to June 2026, 74.1% of expiring .com names were renewed rather than deleted, by our calculation from ICANN reports. Across the 65 largest new gTLDs the rate was 22.7%, and 25 of the 75 largest gTLDs renewed fewer than 20% of their expiring names.
Which registrar has the most domain names?
GoDaddy.com, LLC holds 49,152,691 .com names, 28.9% of the TLD, in ICANN’s Jun 2026 report. The 10 largest accreditations hold 56.7%, and the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index across all 2,903 accreditations is 972, down from 1,159 in 2016.

(2) ICANN Monthly Registry Reports, per-registrar transactions files (gTLD-transactions-yyyymm.csv) for 1,117 gTLDs for Jun 2026 and Jun 2025, every June from 2015 for gTLDs with at least 100 names, every month from Jul 2025 to Jun 2026 for the 75 largest gTLDs, every month from January 2016 for the 12 largest new gTLDs, and every month for .com. Retrieved October 2026; Jun 2026 was the newest month ICANN had posted.
Definitions. Field meanings follow Specification 3 of ICANN’s base registry agreement. Domains are “total-domains”, names under sponsorship in any EPP status except pendingCreate. Adds are the net-adds columns (registrations not deleted within the add grace period), renewals the net-renews columns (renewals, automatic or by command, not reversed in the grace period), and deletes “deleted-domains-nograce”. Renewal rate is renewals divided by renewals plus deletes over 12 months; it approximates the share of names reaching expiry that were kept. Turnover is 12-month adds divided by the June 2025 base. Promo churn is renewal rate under 20% with turnover of at least 75%. Legacy gTLDs are those delegated before the 2012 New gTLD Program; all others are new gTLDs. Registrar shares are per IANA accreditation, not per corporate group. HHI is the sum of squared shares times 10,000.
Coverage and limits. ICANN reports cover gTLDs only, not country codes, so every chart and table on this page excludes .cn, .de, .uk and other ccTLDs; only the all-TLD headline figures from Verisign include them. ICANN’s counts run higher than Verisign’s (for example 170.3 million .com names versus 166.6 million) because they include expired names still in grace periods. The June history includes TLDs still in the root zone with at least 100 names in 2025 or 2026 plus TLDs listed on ICANN’s report page that have since left the root zone; smaller current TLDs are excluded from every year. Registry reports contain no prices: the promo-churn test identifies a pattern consistent with discounted first-year pricing, not the discount itself. Transactions are reported in the month a grace period ends, so monthly figures lag the underlying events by days to weeks.
Licensing. ICANN publishes registry reports publicly under its registry agreements; we attribute ICANN as the source, and the CC BY download contains only our ICANN-derived table. The few all-TLD figures are cited from Verisign’s public press release, which reports DNIB.com data. Credit: DNIB.com, a website sponsored by Verisign.
