Amazon layoffs by state: every state with a notice

The table adds up each notice Amazon filed under its own name, or a subsidiary’s, from January 2022 to the newest files. California and Washington hold 66% of workers since October 2025, but for different reasons: 62% of California’s are store closures, while 87% of Washington’s are corporate. Washington leads on corporate cuts alone, 4,501 to California’s 2,565. New York’s 1,079 includes a single closure in Lancaster (542), and Illinois, Maryland and Pennsylvania are entirely store closures. Virginia holds no Amazon row at an Arlington address: its 938 are 691 at Fairfax-area store sites and 247 at BWI1 in Sterling.

Dates are the date the state received the notice (California, Washington), the notice date (New York, Virginia, Maryland, Illinois), or the month posted (New Jersey, Pennsylvania). Corporate rounds are the October 2025 and January 2026 office notices. Other includes Washington’s three smaller letters (84, 57, 121), Lancaster, BWI1 and California’s August 2026 notices. New Jersey’s January 2026 notice of 871 is listed by county with no type, so it sits in the unsplit column, along with Audible’s 67 in Newark.

Texas carries a caveat worth stating: the Texas Workforce Commission site did not resolve from our host, so we used the state’s open data copy, which stops at June 23, 2026. Two Texas rows mention Amazon in the name (107 each, September 2025), but both were filed by a contractor, Accelore Group, at Amazon delivery stations, so our rule leaves them out.

Amazon layoffs by location: cities and buildings

Amazon’s Washington letters and California’s file list workers per building, which is detail no press tally carries. In the two corporate rounds, Seattle has 3,293 workers across the letters and Bellevue 910. Washington’s letters also list 232 remote employees, 116 in each round, and only 33 at codes outside the SEA office series, often one or two HR or quality staff per building.

The rounds behind the state totals

Corporate cuts are what most Amazon layoffs coverage means, and the notices track them to the day. The chart adds store closures and other notices that the corporate memos never mention.

WARN against the announced totals: a 25% match

The October 2025 round announced about 14,000 roles; notices in the states we read name 4,202, or 30%. The January 2026 round announced about 16,000; notices name 3,358, or 21%. Together that is 7,560 of 30,000. Three things in the documents account for part of the gap, and we can size only some of it:

  • Geography. Amazon’s numbers are worldwide and the January memo says timing varies “internationally.” No filing we read gives a U.S. share.
  • Unread states. 28 state files are closed to us, including Texas’s live file, Georgia, Oregon, Ohio and Florida, so any corporate notices there are missing.
  • Transfers. Each Washington letter says employees “who accept internal transfer opportunities” before their date “will not be separated,” and Amazon offered most U.S. employees 90 days to look. Notices count who was told, not who left. Amazon has not published how many transferred.

Site size thresholds removed little in Washington: the October letter lists 13 buildings with one employee, so Amazon reported small sites rather than dropping them. For the wider trend, our tech layoffs tracker built from WARN notices puts Amazon against other employers. For whether AI was the reason, our AI layoffs attribution ledger reads the same two memos: October’s cites AI as context, January’s does not mention it.

Which teams? What the job titles show

Neither the October 2025 nor the January 2026 memo names a team, unlike the 2023 memos, which named Stores, PXT, AWS, Advertising and Twitch. Press lists of affected teams are unconfirmed by the company. The hard evidence is the title list attached to Amazon’s two main Washington letters, which together cover 4,501 employees. Software engineers are 33% of them, rising from 30% in the October letter to 37% in January. Titles do not reveal the business unit, so these rows cannot say which were at AWS.

What changed in the latest round

The newest filings arrived August 31, 2026: 121 in Washington and 148 in California (Amazon’s SFO19 at 350 Bush Street and SJC13 at 1160 Enterprise Way), 269 in all. Two things differ from the big rounds. First, Amazon’s news site carries no memo or post on them. Second, the state letter trails the workers: Washington’s letter, dated August 28, says employees were told between about July 1 and July 29, with separations from October 1 to October 27. The July 2 letter (57 workers) has the same shape. Every scheduled date has now passed. The August letter also reaches further from the offices: 32 of the 121 are at BFI1 in Sumner, a warehouse code. KIRO 7 reported the 121 figure and GeekWire reported the 57; both match the state file.

Is another round coming? What Amazon has said

Amazon’s January 28, 2026 memo asks itself whether broad reductions every few months are the new rhythm, and answers:

“That’s not our plan. But just as we always have, every team will continue to evaluate the ownership, speed, and capacity to invent for customers, and make adjustments as appropriate.”

That is Amazon’s most direct statement. The record since is consistent with both halves: no large announcement in nine months, and smaller notices in July and August. Press reports of further plans are unconfirmed and we do not count them. Filings add little: none of the 63 8-Ks on Amazon’s EDGAR list back to October 2020 uses Item 2.05, the item for exit costs.

The money trail stops too. Amazon booked about $500 million of estimated severance through nine months of 2023, then about $2.7 billion in 2025, $1.8 billion of it in the third quarter and $730 million in the fourth. The 10-Qs for all three 2026 quarters, the latest filed October 30, 2026, do not contain the word “severance,” even though the January round was announced after the last quarter with a disclosed charge. Headcount kept rising: 1,638,000 at September 30, 2026, the highest in Amazon’s earnings releases since 2022, above 1,622,000 in Q1 2022. That count covers all full-time and part-time staff, and these filings do not break out corporate workers, so a record total does not contradict 30,000 corporate cuts.

Quarter end Employees reported
Q4 2024 1,556,000
Q1 2025 1,560,000
Q2 2025 1,546,000
Q3 2025 1,578,000
Q4 2025 1,576,000

What this means for MSPs

Hiring (practical advice). The pool closest to MSP work is small. The two main Washington letters list 6 system administrators, 47 support engineers and 19 solutions architects, 1.6% of 4,501 titles, against 1,499 software engineers. Those separations ran from January to June 2026; the last filed notices ran through October 27, 2026. For which roles are growing rather than who is available this month, see BLS’s outlook for IT and cybersecurity jobs.

AWS accounts (practical advice, not a finding). We cannot show that any AWS customer lost support because of these cuts, and Amazon has not said so. Solutions architect and support engineer titles do appear in the notices, so if a client relies on a named AWS contact, confirm that contact in the next account review and document your escalation path.

Client offboarding. Amazon’s July and August letters reached the state about two months after workers were told. For MSPs with clients in similar positions, the state filing date is too late to plan access removal around, so ask HR for separation dates directly.

Frequently asked questions

Which states had Amazon layoffs?

Since October 2025, WARN notices name Amazon workers in California, Washington, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland. Nevada’s notice (325 at RNO4 in Reno) came in June 2025. 28 state files could not be read, so this list can grow.

How many Amazon layoffs were in Washington state?

5,164 workers in six notices since October 2025: 2,303 on October 28, 84 on December 13, 401 store workers on January 28, 2,198 on January 30, 57 on July 2 and 121 on August 31, 2026.

Where were Amazon layoffs by location?

In the two corporate rounds, the largest city counts are Seattle (3,293), Sunnyvale (1,083), Bellevue (910). The largest single building is 2021 7th Ave, Seattle, WA with 384. Fresh and Go closures add sites in California, Washington, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and New York.

Why do WARN notices show fewer than 30,000 Amazon layoffs?

Amazon’s 30,000 is a global role count. The notices we can read cover 7,560 of those roles, 25%. Notices are filed only for U.S. sites above state and federal thresholds, 28 state files could not be read, and workers who take an internal transfer are removed from separations.

Is another round of Amazon layoffs coming?

Amazon has announced none. Its January 2026 memo says broad cuts every few months is “not our plan” but that teams will keep adjusting. Smaller notices followed: 57 in July and 269 on August 31, 2026, both with no company post. The October 30, 2026 10-Q never uses the word severance.

Did Amazon’s headcount fall after the layoffs?

No. Amazon reported 1,638,000 employees at September 30, 2026, up from 1,576,000 at the end of 2025 and above the previous high of 1,622,000 in Q1 2022. That count covers all full-time and part-time staff, and Amazon does not publish a corporate headcount in these filings.

State WARN files listed above, retrieved November 2, 2026; Amazon’s six posts on aboutamazon.com; Amazon’s 10-K and 10-Q filings since 2022, every quarterly earnings release since February 2022 for employee counts, and its 8-K index, from SEC EDGAR. All fetch scripts rerun from scratch. For Amazon posts we also read the URLs in the aboutamazon.com sitemap and found no layoff post after January 2026.

Name matching rule. A row counts only if the filer name begins with Amazon, Amazonfresh, Amazon.com, Amazon Web Services, AWS, Whole Foods, Zoox, Twitch, Audible, Ring LLC, One Medical, 1Life Healthcare, Kuiper, Zappos, Wondery or PillPack. Rows are dropped if the name describes a delivery service partner or a contractor “at Amazon.” The rule runs against 18 test names in code before each build, including true matches such as “Twitch Interactive, Inc. SFO19 Facility” and traps such as “ABM General Services, Inc. at FAT 1 Amazon,” “Accelore Group-Amazon Logistics” and “Ring Container.” We read every rejected row by hand: nine contractor rows in California, New York and Texas. Contractors’ own Amazon-related layoffs are therefore excluded, and no Zoox, Ring, One Medical, Kuiper, Zappos or Wondery notice appeared in the files we read.

Types. Our labels, not the state’s. Store closures: facility codes MA and MB, names with Fresh or Long Island, Washington’s January 28 letter (Go and Fresh codes), Virginia’s January 28 row, and four California closures at retail addresses in October 2025. Corporate rounds: Washington, California and New York rows dated October 28 to 29, 2025 and January 28 to 30, 2026, plus New Jersey’s Jersey City row posted in October 2025. The chart also marks Washington, California and New York rows from November 2022 to January 2023 as corporate. The rest is labelled other. The California row’s “effective” year on three October 2025 Culver City rows reads 2025, an obvious typo for 2026; we corrected it and kept the filed value in the CSV.

Counting. Workers as listed on each notice. Duplicate California rows and superseded New York versions are removed. Notices are plans: separations can change after filing. A state “read, none found” means no match in the rows that file holds for the stated window; Maryland’s public log covers 2026 only.

Privacy. Two later Amazon letters and all Oracle letters attach exhibits of individuals. We use only aggregate counts and publish no names, addresses or individual job rows.

Not advice. This is an analysis of public filings, not legal or employment advice.
