We downloaded StatCounter’s monthly browser series back to January 2009 for the world and the US on every platform, all-device data for 249 countries and territories since 2023, desktop and mobile data for the 50 largest markets, and StatCounter’s operating system series for context. As an independent check we pulled the US government’s Digital Analytics Program (DAP) browser and device data for visits to federal websites since August 2023. A page quoting StatCounter’s August 2026 figure (Chrome 69.28% in our download) is quoting a month that includes distorted desktop traffic, explained below.
Seventeen years of browser market share
In January 2009, Internet Explorer had 64.97% of page views worldwide and Chrome had 1.37%. Chrome passed Firefox on desktops in November 2011 and passed Internet Explorer across all platforms in May 2012; in the US it took until June 2013. Mobile then widened the lead: Chrome had 37.69% of mobile page views in January 2016 and 67.77% in September 2026. Firefox peaked at 31.82% in November 2009. Internet Explorer, retired by Microsoft on most Windows 10 versions on June 15, 2022, is down to 0.01%.

The distortion: why Chrome lost 8.0 desktop points in a month
From July 2025 to August 2026, Chrome averaged 73.16% of desktop page views worldwide, against 65.42% from January 2024 to June 2025, and peaked at 78.14% in October 2025. Over the same months, the share of desktop page views that StatCounter could not assign to any operating system averaged 16.68%, against 6.44% before. In September 2026 the unidentified share fell from 24.09% to 5.20%, and Chrome dropped from 73.17% to 65.14%, back to its 2024 level. Since June 2023 the two monthly series have a correlation of 0.78.

Edge: the slow climb of Microsoft’s second browser
Microsoft’s browsers hit bottom in December 2019, with 8.16% of desktop page views worldwide (Internet Explorer and the original Edge combined). The Chromium-based Edge first passed 1% of desktop views in April 2020. Its yearly desktop average rose from 6.1% in 2020 to 13.3% in 2024, slipped to 12.0% in 2025 while the distortion inflated Chrome, and reached 14.64% in September 2026, its highest monthly figure (the previous high was 13.90% in February 2025). In the US it had 14.83% of desktop views, level with Safari’s 14.04%. On phones Edge has 0.41%, so its all-device share is 6.02%.

Safari: the US vs worldwide gap
Safari’s share is 1.7 times higher in the US (30.35%) than worldwide (18.20%), and the gap is a phone story. On mobile, Safari had 46.31% of US page views against 24.59% worldwide, tracking iOS, which ran 53.51% of US mobile page views and 30.66% worldwide. Safari led Chrome on US phones in every month since 2009 except Oct 2024, Nov 2024, Dec 2024 and Sep 2026; in September 2026 Chrome edged ahead, 47.50% to 46.31%. On desktops Safari is a Mac browser: 14.04% in the US, 8.06% worldwide.
Firefox, Samsung Internet, Opera and Brave
Firefox had 2.79% of all page views worldwide in September 2026, down from a peak of 31.82% in November 2009; on desktops it fell from 32.21% to 6.09%. It still has 5.56% of US desktop views. Samsung Internet had 3.49% of mobile page views worldwide, half its Jan 2019 peak of 7.43%. Opera had 1.77% across all devices and 2.38% on desktops. UC Browser, which had 20.49% of mobile page views in May 2016, is down to 0.79%. Brave first appears in StatCounter’s data in March 2025 and had 1.11% of desktop views worldwide in September 2026.
AI browsers. None of the 91 browser labels in the StatCounter series we downloaded is an AI browser, so any AI-branded browser is counted under whatever browser name it reports, or under Other. Browser market share by country
Chrome was the most-used browser in 229 of the 243 countries and territories StatCounter reports for September 2026, and in 93 of the 100 largest markets. The exception among those 100 was Sri Lanka (Edge, 54.34%), a single-month figure we treat with caution. Safari led in 11 small territories. Among the 100 largest markets, Chrome’s lowest shares were in Norway (33.9%), Sri Lanka (37.5%), Switzerland (40.1%), Austria (46.7%), Canada (47.0%). Its highest were in India (88.7%), Myanmar (84.2%), Philippines (83.7%). Safari’s strongest large markets were Canada (36.3%), Saudi Arabia (35.9%), Norway (33.7%), Australia (32.4%); Edge’s were Sri Lanka (54.3%), China (17.5%), Japan (15.1%).

Cross-check: browsers on US federal websites
DAP counts visits to participating US government websites, a different audience from StatCounter’s mostly commercial sites. In September 2026, Chrome had 60.76% of those visits, Safari 25.78% (including in-app Safari), Edge 8.74%, Firefox 1.46% and Samsung Internet 0.75%. The ranking matches StatCounter’s US data. Chrome’s DAP share has risen from an average of 48.1% between August 2023 and August 2025 to 60.8%, at the same time as desktop’s share of federal visits jumped from 46.6% in August 2025 to 60.1% in September 2026; DAP does not break browsers down by device, so we cannot tell how much of the Chrome gain is that desktop shift. Internet Explorer still had 0.07% of federal visits.

What this means for MSPs
Standardize on two browsers, and manage both. Chrome and Edge together had 75.7% of US desktop page views in September 2026. Both run on Chromium and both are configured through published policy templates (Microsoft’s Edge policy reference and Google’s Chrome Enterprise policy list), so one baseline (extensions allowlist, password manager settings, update channel, Safe Browsing level) can be written once and pushed through Intune, Group Policy or your RMM. On Windows fleets that assume Edge is the only browser, inventory Chrome installs first: any copy outside the baseline is unmanaged.
Do not ignore Safari and Firefox. Safari is 14.04% of US desktop views and Firefox 5.56%. Safari does not read Chromium policy templates and is configured through your Mac MDM, so test line-of-business web apps in Safari and decide whether to allow it or to deploy and manage Chrome or Edge on Macs too.
Retire the last Internet Explorer dependencies. IE is 0.01% of global page views but still 0.07% of visits to federal websites. Microsoft ended support for the IE11 desktop application on most Windows 10 versions on June 15, 2022. Microsoft’s own guidance is to open legacy IE-based sites in Edge’s IE mode, which it says will be supported through at least 2029. Move any client app that still needs IE onto an IE mode site list you control, and plan its replacement alongside the OS work in our Windows 11 market share report.
Read browser statistics with the month attached. Quoting August 2026’s 69.28% for Chrome, or a Jul 2025 to Aug 2026 desktop figure, overstates Chrome. Use September 2026 or months before mid-2025, and give the platform: “Chrome 66.45% of all page views worldwide, StatCounter, September 2026”.
Frequently asked questions
Which browser has the biggest market share?
Google Chrome. In September 2026 it had 66.45% of page views across all devices worldwide, according to StatCounter Global Stats, followed by Safari (18.20%), Edge (6.02%), Firefox (2.79%) and Samsung Internet (2.31%). Chrome led in 229 of the 243 countries and territories StatCounter reports.
What are the top 5 web browsers?
Worldwide on all platforms in September 2026: Chrome 66.45%, Safari 18.20%, Edge 6.02%, Firefox 2.79% and Samsung Internet 2.31%. On desktops the order is Chrome 65.14%, Edge 14.64%, Safari 8.06%, Firefox 6.09% and Opera 2.38%.
What is Safari’s market share in the US?
Safari had 30.35% of US page views across all devices in September 2026, against 18.20% worldwide. On US phones it had 46.31%, almost level with Chrome’s 47.50%; Safari led US mobile in every month since 2009 except 4.
Is Microsoft Edge gaining market share?
Slowly. Edge had 14.64% of desktop page views worldwide in September 2026, its highest monthly figure, and its yearly desktop average rose from 6.1% in 2020 to a peak of 13.3% in 2024. Across all devices it had 6.02%, because it barely registers on phones (0.41%).
Is Firefox dying?
Its share has fallen for 17 years. Firefox peaked at 31.82% of all page views worldwide in November 2009 and had 2.79% in September 2026. It holds more on desktops, 6.09% worldwide and 5.56% in the US.
Does StatCounter track AI browsers?
Not as named browsers. None of the 91 browser labels in the StatCounter series we downloaded is an AI browser; the newest label is Brave, first listed in March 2025 and at 0.45% of worldwide page views in September 2026.
Methodology
Sources. StatCounter Global Stats: “Browser Market Share” for all platforms combined, desktop, mobile and tablet; “Operating System Market Share” (desktop, with Unknown; mobile); and “Desktop vs Mobile vs Tablet vs Console”, downloaded as monthly CSV from StatCounter’s chart export on 2026-10-30. GSA Digital Analytics Program API v2, reports “browser” and “device”, daily visits to participating federal websites, Aug 2023 to Sep 2026, downloaded on 2026-10-30.
Definitions. Shares are of page views (StatCounter) or visits (DAP), not users or devices. “All platforms” is StatCounter’s desktop, mobile, tablet and console combined. Microsoft’s browsers are Internet Explorer, Edge Legacy and Edge combined. DAP Safari includes “Safari (in-app)”. Country leaders exclude “Other” and “Unknown”. The distortion window (Jul 2025 to Aug 2026) is the run of months in which StatCounter’s unidentified desktop operating system share stayed above 9.5%.
Coverage. September 2026 is the latest complete month; October 2026 was partial at retrieval and is excluded. Brave appears in StatCounter’s data from Mar 2025. Sample sizes are from StatCounter’s July 2022 country list.
Limitations. StatCounter measures page views on sites running its tracker, without weighting, and says it may revise data for 45 days. StatCounter says it removes bot activity and adjusts for prerendering in Chrome; browsers are classified from what they report about themselves. DAP is subject to Google Analytics sampling and covers only visits to US government websites.
Not advice. This is an analysis of public usage data, not a software recommendation.
