We downloaded StatCounter’s monthly desktop operating system series back to January 2009 for the world, North America, the US and 249 countries and territories, its macOS version series since 2017, the US government’s Digital Analytics Program data on visits to federal websites, and the Mac net sales line from every Apple 10-K since fiscal 2019 and every 10-Q since late 2023. StatCounter now splits Macs into two labels, “OS X” (10.65% worldwide) and “macOS” (6.09%), since March 2025; quoting only one of them, as some pages do, undercounts the Mac by a third or more.

Ranked among the 100 countries with the largest StatCounter samples (its July 2022 list, the latest published). Desktop page views, September 2026. *Mean of January to May plus September, the months outside the summer 2026 anomaly, for each year.

Single months are noisy at country level, so for the one-year comparison we average the same six months in each year (January to May plus September). On that basis 45 of 94 of these countries had a higher Mac share in 2026 than in 2025. The biggest gains were in Sweden (+11.8 points), Angola (+9.1) and Ireland (+7.1); the largest falls were in Singapore (-18.2) and Albania (-7.6). Worldwide the same measure moved from 16.45% to 16.24%, and in the US from 23.46% to 26.78%.

Is Mac market share growing?

Over 17 years, yes. Since 2020, no. In January 2009 Macs were 3.69% of desktop page views worldwide and 6.74% in the US. By 2020 the yearly averages had reached 18.05% and 27.88%. Since then the worldwide average has stayed between 15.86% and 18.05% in every year except 2023, and the US average between 24.74% and 28.77%. In 2026 so far it is 16.24% worldwide and 26.78% in the US.

The 2023 exception (19.97% worldwide, 31.58% in the US) comes from a nine-month plateau in StatCounter’s series that ended abruptly: the US figure fell from 33.57% in November 2023 to 25.60% in December. Federal website traffic, measured independently, showed no such drop (22.54% to 23.18%), so we do not read 2023 as a real surge.

Why we leave out summer 2026. StatCounter’s Mac numbers jumped in June to August 2026: worldwide to 26.65% in August 2026, and in the US to 33.32% in June 2026. The traffic behind it was not normal Mac use. In August 2026, 39.4% of worldwide Mac page views reported Mac OS X 10.0 “Cheetah”, the oldest release on Apple’s macOS version list, against a 2.0% average from October 2025 to May 2026. The same months produced the Linux spike documented in our Linux market share analysis. September 2026 is back in line with the months before June, so we use it as the headline month.

Apple’s own numbers: Mac revenue is growing again

Apple’s 10-K reports Mac net sales but no Mac unit sales or installed base, so revenue is the closest primary signal. Mac net sales peaked at $40.2 billion in fiscal 2022, fell to $29.4 billion in fiscal 2023, and recovered to $33.7 billion in fiscal 2025 (8.1% of Apple’s revenue). In the first nine months of fiscal 2026 they reached $27.1 billion, up 8.6% on the same period a year earlier, and the April to June 2026 quarter brought $10.35 billion, up 28.7% on a year earlier, the largest Mac quarter in the filings we parsed (every quarter since October to December 2022). Revenue mixes units and prices, so it cannot prove more Macs are in use; it does show demand recovering while web share is flat.

StatCounter’s headline series leaves out page views from unidentified systems; in September 2026 those were 5.20% of worldwide desktop views, and counting them as a category puts the Mac at 15.87% worldwide and 25.79% in the US. That second series explains the lower figures some pages quote for mid-2026: in May 2026 it showed the Mac at 14.70% with 18.74% of views unidentified, while the headline series showed 18.09%.

Mac share of all devices

Most web traffic now comes from phones, so the Mac is a small slice of everything: 6.35% of all page views worldwide in September 2026 and 12.66% in the US. Apple’s platforms as a whole are much bigger, because iOS added 19.37% worldwide and 27.87% in the US, for a combined 25.7% and 40.5%. Android led worldwide with 42.65%, Windows had 28.98%.

Which macOS versions are in use: what the data can and cannot see

StatCounter publishes a macOS version series, but most of it is a browser artifact. Safari and Chrome stopped reporting the real macOS version years ago and send “Mac OS X 10_15_7” from any Mac on macOS 11 or later (Chromium documents the cap from Chrome 90; WebKit’s bug tracker records Safari’s). So in September 2026, 74.6% of Mac page views worldwide carried the 10.15 Catalina label, a release Apple shipped in October 2019. Only 15.3% identified a specific macOS 11 or later release.

What the series does show reliably is the tail of very old Macs, whose browsers predate the freeze and still report their true version. Macs on 10.14 Mojave or older, none of which appear on Apple’s current security releases list, were 2.9% of worldwide Mac page views in September 2026 and 2.4% in the US.

Cross-check: Macs on US federal websites

The Digital Analytics Program (DAP) measures visits to participating US government websites, a different audience from StatCounter’s mostly commercial sites. It gives a steadier read: Macs were between 21.5% and 23.3% of desktop visits every month from August 2023 to August 2025, averaging 22.4%. Since then the DAP share has drifted lower, to 18.80% in September 2026, against 21.22% a year earlier, while StatCounter’s US figure moved the other way. A February to April 2026 bump (peak 28.0% in April 2026) did not repeat in StatCounter, and we found no cause in the data. Both sources put the Mac at between roughly one in five and one in four US desktops.

What this means for MSPs

Plan for Macs in every US client, then count them. 26.44% of US desktop page views and 18.8% of desktop visits to federal sites came from Macs in September 2026; Denmark, Australia, Canada and Switzerland run higher still. A 40-seat US office that matched these averages would have 8 to 11 Macs. A per-device agreement written around Windows endpoints leaves those unmanaged, so price, inventory and onboard Macs as their own line.

Manage Macs through an MDM, not the browser. Because Safari and Chrome report every modern Mac as 10.15.7, web logs, SaaS admin consoles and conditional-access reports that read the user agent cannot tell a patched Mac from an old one. Enroll company Macs through Apple Business Manager into your MDM so the agent reports the real OS build, and use that for compliance and patch reporting.

Watch the patch window. Apple’s security release page lists updates on October 26, 2026 for macOS Golden Gate 27, macOS Tahoe 26 and macOS Sequoia 15. The latest listed Sonoma 14 update is dated August 6, 2026, and the last Ventura 13 update was August 20, 2025. Treat anything older than the three newest major releases as a replacement or upgrade project, the same way you track Windows releases after their end-of-support date and monthly Patch Tuesday volume.

Quote the right number. If a client or prospect asks how common Macs are, the defensible answer is “16.7% of desktop web traffic worldwide and 26.4% in the US, StatCounter, September 2026”. Quoting one of StatCounter’s two Mac labels alone, or a summer 2026 month, gives a misleading figure.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of computers are Macs?

About 16.7% of desktop and laptop page views worldwide came from Macs in September 2026, and 26.4% in the United States, according to StatCounter Global Stats. Counting phones and tablets too, Macs were 6.35% of all page views worldwide. On US federal websites, Macs made up 18.8% of desktop visits in September 2026.

Is Mac market share growing?

Not in usage data since 2020. Worldwide, the Mac’s yearly average rose from 4.2% in 2009 to 18.1% in 2020 and was 16.2% in 2026 so far; in the US it went from 9.9% to 27.9%, and is 26.8% in 2026. Apple’s Mac revenue is growing again: $27.1 billion in the first nine months of fiscal 2026, up 8.6%.

What is the Mac vs Windows market share?

In September 2026, Windows had 76.41% of desktop page views worldwide and macOS 16.74%, about 4.6 Windows PCs for every Mac. In the US the split was 64.52% to 26.44%, or 2.4 to 1. Linux had 4.54% worldwide.

Which country has the highest Mac market share?

Among the 100 countries with the most StatCounter traffic, Denmark had the highest Mac share in September 2026 at 30.78%, followed by Australia (30.32%) and Canada (29.82%). The lowest were Iran (1.21%) and Sri Lanka (1.30%).

Which macOS version is most used?

StatCounter cannot say for most Macs. In September 2026, 74.6% of Mac page views worldwide reported macOS 10.15 Catalina, because Safari and Chrome freeze the version in their user agent at 10.15.7 on any newer Mac. Only 15.3% of views identified macOS 11 or later by version.

How much does Apple make from the Mac?

Apple reported $33.7 billion in Mac net sales for fiscal 2025, 8.1% of its total revenue and up 12.4% on fiscal 2024. Mac sales peaked at $40.2 billion in fiscal 2022. Apple’s filings report Mac revenue, not units.

Methodology

Sources. StatCounter Global Stats: “Operating System Market Share” (desktop, and desktop plus mobile plus tablet plus console), in its headline form that excludes Unknown and its detailed form that keeps it, and “macOS Version Market Share” (desktop), downloaded as monthly CSV from StatCounter’s chart export on 2026-10-30. GSA Digital Analytics Program API v2, report “os”, daily visits to participating federal websites, Aug 2023 to Sep 2026 (downloaded October 15 to 18, 2026). Apple Inc. Forms 10-K (fiscal 2019 to 2025) and 10-Q (fiscal 2024 to 2026) from SEC EDGAR, Mac and total net sales read from the inline XBRL. Apple’s security releases page for patch dates. Natural Earth 1:110m countries for the map.

Definitions. Mac share is StatCounter’s “OS X” plus “macOS” labels; StatCounter introduced the second label in March 2025 and both are Macs. Desktop includes laptops. Country rankings cover the 100 countries with the largest StatCounter samples. Yearly averages are means of monthly values, with June to August 2026 excluded. macOS version groups combine StatCounter’s release-name and point-version labels by major release.

Coverage. September 2026 is the latest complete month; October 2026 was partial at retrieval and is excluded. Apple’s fiscal 2026 fourth quarter had not been filed at retrieval.

Limitations. StatCounter and DAP count page views and visits, not devices: heavy users and some automated traffic count more, and StatCounter says it may revise data for 45 days. Neither measures the installed base. Apple’s revenue mixes units and prices. Shipment trackers measure new sales in a quarter, which is a different quantity from usage share.

Not advice. This is an analysis of public usage and financial data, not a purchasing recommendation.
