Search Engine Market Share: Google at 89.9% After Its Biggest Slide Since 2009, Which Went to Bing and Yandex
Search engine market share in September 2026: Google had 89.94% of worldwide search referrals, Bing 5.29%, Yahoo! 1.36% and Yandex 1.31%, according to StatCounter Global Stats. Google’s share fell 2.82 points over 2024 and 2025, its largest two-year fall since the data began in 2009, but the share went to Bing and Yandex. AI chatbots sent 0.40% of all referrals.
We downloaded StatCounter’s monthly search engine data from January 2009 to September 2026 for the world and 27 markets and regions, split into all platforms, desktop, mobile and tablet, plus the latest three years for 241 countries. We then tested Google’s share in 2024 to 2026 against its own month-to-month and year-to-year history, set it beside StatCounter’s chatbot referral data, checked every figure in the top 10 search results against our download, and read the court filings in United States v. Google.

Has Google’s share dropped as AI chat tools grew?
We compared the same months each year (January to September) so that seasonality and the incomplete current year do not distort the result, and measured each change against the year-to-year changes from 2010 to 2023.

Yes, the 2024 to 2025 fall is real, and bigger than noise, though only just for any single year. The -1.64 point change in 2024 was the biggest yearly fall since 2009 and 2.0 standard deviations below the average yearly change of +0.20 points from 2010 to 2023, right at the edge of the shaded band. What has no precedent is the two years together: a 2.82 point fall, against a previous record of 2.24 points. The month-to-month standard deviation also rose, from 0.38 points in 2015 to 2023 to 0.44 since 2024. On desktop the 2024 fall was 4.23 points; on mobile 0.92.
But the share went to other search engines. Between the 2023 and 2025 annual averages, Google lost 2.43 points. Bing gained 1.05, Yandex 0.86, DuckDuckGo 0.29 and Yahoo! 0.21. Measured to January to September 2026, Bing’s gain is 1.96 points and Yandex’s has disappeared (-0.03). StatCounter’s search engine figures only divide clicks among search engines, so a chatbot cannot take share in this series.
And the chatbots are still tiny. StatCounter has tracked chatbot referrals since April 2025. Over Apr 2025 to Sep 2026, Google averaged 90.18% of search referrals, against 90.09% in the same months a year earlier, while chatbots’ share of all referrals went from 0.21% in April 2025 to 0.40% in September 2026, peaking at 0.43% in April 2026. Google’s share did not fall over the period in which chatbot referrals were measured. In September 2026, search engines sent 91.01% of all referral page views, social networks 8.60% and chatbots 0.40%. In StatCounter’s head-to-head series, Google had 99.61% of Google plus ChatGPT referrals and ChatGPT 0.39%. Our ChatGPT market share report breaks the chatbot referrals down.

Google is stronger on phones than on desktops in most markets (the exceptions in the chart are Turkey, South Korea and China): 95.68% of worldwide mobile search referrals in September 2026, against 78.09% on desktop, where Bing had 14.65%. Google’s 2024 fall was much larger on desktop (4.23 points, January to September averages) than on mobile (0.92), and desktop is where the series is now noisiest.

Why the headlines say 89%, 90% and 91%
The usage figures in the top results all trace back to StatCounter. 5 of the 5 exact figures we could check match our download to within 0.1 points for the month they describe. The rounded figures of about 90% are consistent, except that Wikipedia’s January 2022 Bing and Yandex numbers do not match the current series, and Statista’s headline comes from a month that was not over. The differences come from the month and platform quoted, not the method.

How StatCounter compares with the court’s query data
The court in United States v. Google measured something StatCounter cannot: searches. Its August 5, 2024 findings of fact put Google’s share of US general search queries at 89.2% in 2020, 94.9% on mobile and 84% on desktop, with Bing at 5.5%, Yahoo at 2.2% and DuckDuckGo at 2.1%. StatCounter’s US referral shares for 2020 were close: Google 87.98% (94.92% mobile, 80.30% desktop), Bing 6.64%, Yahoo! 3.39% and DuckDuckGo 1.62%.
The Google antitrust remedies, from the court record
Judge Amit Mehta found in August 2024 that Google had unlawfully maintained monopolies in general search and search text advertising. The remedies came in two steps: a remedies opinion on September 2, 2025, and a final judgment entered on December 5, 2025 with an accompanying memorandum opinion. From the judgment and opinion:
- Exclusive deals. Google may not condition licences or payments on device makers or carriers not distributing rival search engines, browsers or generative AI products, and any agreement tied to distributing Google Search, Chrome, Google Assistant or a Google generative AI product must end within one year.
- Defaults. Default-placement deals with browser developers and Apple must expire after one year and must allow promotion of rival search engines and AI products.
- Data sharing and syndication. Google must give “Qualified Competitors” parts of its search index and some user-interaction data at marginal cost, and offer them five-year licences to syndicate its search results and search text ads.
- Rejected. The court rejected “the divestiture of Chrome, mandated choice screens, and a complete payment ban”, among other proposals.
- Timing. The judgment took effect 60 days after entry and runs for six years. A five-member Technical Committee was fully onboarded on June 15, 2026. In their September 17, 2026 status report, the plaintiffs said they were still “working on establishing the procedures for certifying Qualified Competitors”.
So through September 2026, the data-sharing and syndication remedies had not reached any rival, and they cannot explain any share change in this data. If the one-year limit on default deals changes which search engine browsers and phones send people to, the desktop and mobile series above are where it would show first.
What this means for MSPs
Google is still about nine in ten search clicks. For client SEO and paid search, Google’s 89.9% of worldwide referrals (85.2% in the US) still decides most organic traffic. Bing’s 9.9% of US referrals, and 18.8% of US desktop referrals, is large enough to justify Bing Webmaster Tools and a Microsoft Ads test for B2B clients whose buyers work on Windows desktops.
Check client analytics before buying the AI-search story. Chatbots sent 0.40% of referral page views in September 2026. Google’s share fell in 2024 and 2025 but recovered in 2026, and the share it lost went to other search engines. The open question is volume, not share: compare each client’s organic sessions year on year rather than relying on market share charts.
Mind the regional exceptions. Clients selling into Russia, South Korea, China, Japan or Czechia face Yandex, Naver, Baidu, a desktop market where Bing is now near half, and Seznam. Local search registration and ad accounts matter there in a way they do not in the US.
Quote shares with their month and platform. As with desktop operating systems in our Linux market share and Windows 11 market share reports, a single StatCounter month can move a point or more. Say “89.94% of worldwide search referrals, StatCounter, September 2026”, not “Google has 90% of search”.

Google LLC, No. 1:20-cv-03010-APM (D.D.C.): memorandum opinion of August 5, 2024 (ECF 1033), final judgment and memorandum opinion of December 5, 2025 (ECF 1462 and 1461), and plaintiffs’ second status report of September 17, 2026 (ECF 1552). The headline pages in the reconciliation table, read in October 2026.
Definitions. Share is each engine’s share of search engine referrals to sites running StatCounter’s tracker. Yandex combines StatCounter’s “YANDEX” and “YANDEX RU” labels. The noise test compares January to September averages year on year; the reference distribution is the 14 yearly changes from 2010 to 2023 (mean +0.20, standard deviation 0.92 points). The two-year change compares January to September 2025 with January to September 2023. Country rankings use the average of Jul 2026 to Sep 2026.
Coverage. January 2009 to September 2026; October 2026 was partial at retrieval and is excluded. Country sample sizes come from StatCounter’s July 2022 list, the latest it publishes.
Limitations. Referrals are not searches: engines whose users click fewer results score lower. StatCounter’s sample is the sites that run its tracker, without weighting. It says it removes bot activity and may revise figures for 45 days. Step changes in single countries (Japan’s desktop Bing, China’s Bing) may reflect how traffic is routed or labelled, which we cannot see.
Not advice. This is an analysis of public usage data and court records, not legal or marketing advice.
